Tropes present in the episode:

  • Armor-Piercing Question:
Pete: If you care about me so much, how come you never told me sooner?
Clark: Pete, believe me, there wasn't a day that went by where I didn't want to tell you, but my parents thought it was too dangerous. Not just for me, but for anyone else who knew the truth.
Pete: You didn't think I could handle it?
    Clark: ...Can you?
    (Silence)
  • Distressed Dude: Pete gets taken captive by Dr. Hamilton.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: In the teaser, when Lex tells him their arrangement is over and offers to pay his medical bills, Dr. Hamilton angrily tells him to save his money before storming out.
Dr. Hamilton: I don't need your doctor, and I sure don't need your condescension!
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: In the final act, Jonathan cautions new Secret-Keeper Pete that keeping Clark's powers and origins a secret isn't an easy job.
  • Sarcastic Confession: When Chloe questions Pete about seeing a spaceship in a cornfield, Pete (who's angry with Clark for keeping his secret from him) sarcastically tells her that he saw an alien and that it looked a lot like Clark.
Chloe: My source from the medical center called. He said the guy was rambling on about some spacecraft that landed in a cornfield.
Clark: You don't really believe that, do you?
Chloe: I don't know, not unless Pete can corroborate the story.
Pete: Sure, Chloe, I saw a spaceship. I even met an alien.
Chloe: Really? Would you like to describe it?
Pete: Actually, he looks a lot like Clark.
  • Secret-Keeper: Pete becomes one to Clark.
  • So Proud of You: In the final act, Jonathan expresses this to Pete before warning him that Keeping Secrets Sucks.
Jonathan: Pete, I'm proud of you. But I hope you realize what a tremendous responsibility knowing this secret is. And believe me, it's not gonna get any easier.
Clark: That's my dad's way of saying "Welcome to the family."
  • Villain of the Week: Dr. Steven Hamilton
  • What the Hell, Hero?: To put it simply, Jonathan isn't pleased when Clark tells him and Martha that he told Pete the truth about himself.
Clark: Look, I don't want you guys to freak out, all right? But I told Pete... everything. I didn't have a choice. He saw us.
Jonathan: What do you mean? You could have come to us first!
Clark: And come up with another lie?
