Recap / She Ra And The Princesses Of Power S 1 E 05 The Sea Gate

Go To

The squad heads for the water realm of Salineas ruled by Princess Mermista, but first they need a ship. Catra sets sail with Force Captain Scorpia.

Tropes

  • Accidental Misnaming: Sea Hawk keeps getting Glimmer's name wrong. He finally says it correctly in the end when he asks Mermista to join the alliance.
  • Awesome Mc Cool Name: Bow is very impressed that Seahawk is actually named "Seahawk."
  • Bad Guy Bar: Where Adora and friends go looking for a ship captain.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Scorpia's entrance has her looking imposing with sinister music...and then the music stops, she squeals "Kitty!" and then states that she's a hugger before giving said hug to Catra.
  • Battle Butler: Justified. Mermista's guard is also her butler, but that's because she's understaffed.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Seahawk swings in just in time to save Bow from falling into a boat engine.
  • Cats Hate Water: Catra hates being on a boat surrounded by water.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Seahawk mentions that he set his previous two ships on fire, he does this to his third ship to ram the horde one.
  • Critical Staffing Shortage: Mermista is so understaffed that her guard is also her butler.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Scorpia's reaction to Catra is to go "Kitty!" and hug her.
  • Description Cut:
Seahawk : Tell her Sea Hawk is with them. She’ll be excited to see me.
    [Cut]
Princess Mermista: Ew. Who let him back in here.
  • Deus Exit Machina: She-Ra has to use her sword to recharge the Sea Gate and can't move from that spot, so Catra and the Horde are free to attack her allies.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: Bow shoots an arrow at Lonnie that misses. Turns out it was an acid arrow and he was aiming at the boat.
  • Furry Reminder: Like many real-life cats, Catra hates being picked up and responds by trying to wiggle free.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Glimmer complains that Seahawk isn't taking their mission seriously enough, then immediately makes it clear that a big part of the reason she's so fixated on it is to impress her mother.
  • "I Am" Song: Seahawk gets an "I Am" Sea Shanty, where he sings about how awesome of a sea captain he is.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Adora, Glimmer, and Bow keep interrupting Seahawk's attempts to sing his "I Am" Song.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Seahawk genuinely has some impressive skills, but they just don't compare to a star Horde cadet who can turn into a superhuman warrior, a princess with magical powers and an omnicompetent gadgeteer. As a result, his efforts to show off keep falling flat.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Catra missed Force Captain Orientation, so she had no idea that the Sea Gate even existed.
  • Pyromaniac: Sea Hawk really likes lighting ships on fire. He even did it on a date with Mermista.
  • Ramming Always Works: Seahawk sets his boat on fire and rams it into the Horde ship.
  • Running Gag: People calling Glimmer by the wrong name.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Seahawk's boast that he ran the 50-klick Galebreath Gauntlet in less than 20 klicks is similar to another captain's boast about the Kessel Run.
    • Seahawk's boast about beating a Tyrosaur in a two week long arm wrestling match might allude to The Old Man and the Sea, where the protagonist once managed to beat the strongest man around after a full day and night of effort.

Scorpia

With her endless amounts of kindness, Scorpia is the nicest member of the Horde being friendly to everyone, and almost more of a hero than a villain.

How well does it match the trope?
