Recap / Seinfeld S 9 E 1 The Butter S Have

Go To

George gets a job at Play Now after being mistaken for handicapped (due to using a cane after the injuries he sustained in "The Summer of George") and rolls with it so he can get his own personal bathroom. Kramer shaves with butter and begins using it for body care, which eventually results in him burning himself badly while tanning. Jerry intentionally bombs at a comedy show in an attempt to sabotage Kenny Bania.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When George switches legs, the boss appears he's going to catch on to his charade, but then the next scene show him riding in an electric buggy supplied by Play Now.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Invoked by Jerry, when he mentions cancer in his stand-up so he bombs in an attempt to sabotage Bania.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Played with by Newman who gets the strange temptation to eat Kramer after the latter begins to use butter for body care. All this culminating in Newman attempting to eat him at the comedy show.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: With George being a Jerkass to the old people and began chasing him, the battery on his buggy dies, so George picks up his buggy and attempts to run away, when he bumps into Mr. Thomassoulo, revealing George's lies. And for bonus points, the old man catches him and hits him with his cane.
  • Meat-O-Vision: Newman imagines Kramer as a roast turkey as he catches him tanning with butter.
  • Obfuscating Disability: The Play Now boss Mr. Thomassoulo thinks George is handicapped due to him using a cane. George started to tell him otherwise but after he told him he had to accommodate him, such as giving him his own personal bathroom, he just rolled with it.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When the old man catches up to George after a buggy chase, he gives George a non-fatal one: "Eat Hickory!"
  • Relationship Revolving Door: Elaine and David Puddy break up, then make up, then break up again (all while on a crowded airplane) throughout the episode, starting a Running Gag that would last for the rest of the season.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Jerry intentionally bombs his comedy act in an attempt to sabotage Kenny, who went on after him. But then Kramer gets food spilled on him, resulting in Newman trying to eat him when they ran onto the stage. The NBC executives watching everything thought this was all staged by Kenny, impressing them and getting him a deal with NBC.
