Recap / Seinfeld S 5 E 6 The Lip Reader

Go To

George decides to use Jerry's girlfriend to spy on his friends by having her read their lips. Kramer claims he can also read lips and tries to prove it.

Tropes:

  • Bilingual Bonus: Viewers who know American Sign Language note that Laura correctly indicated that the two characters they were eavesdropping on said, "we'll sweep together" and it was Kramer (who wasn't as fluent in sign language as he claimed to be) that was at fault for the line being misinterpreted as "we'll sleep together", leading to disaster for George.
    • Kramer also signs gibberish to Laura when they first meet—although his signs are correct, they're for random words—"know", "monkey", "dance"—and he isn't forming a clear sentence. She signs back "I don't know what you're saying", although later on, they can be seen in the background, apparently "conversing" easily.
  • Caught on the Jumbotron: George very sloppily a hot fudge sundae on the Jumbotron at the US Open, and the commentators mock him for not using a napkin.
  • Foreshadowing: Laura misreading Jerry's lips and thinking he said "sex" instead of "six" portends her misreading "sweep" as "sleep". Except. . . as cited above, she signed "sweep" correctly. The actual foreshadowing was when Kramer signed perfectly when explaining to Jerry and Elaine that he knows ASL—but also admitting that he hadn't used it in a while, hence him later misinterpreting what Laura signs.
  • Fun with Acronyms: George is fond of these:
    George: She's a B.L.
    Jerry: (confused) A "B.L".??
    George: A "beautiful lineswoman".
  • Fun with Foreign Languages: Kramer misinterpreting Laura signing "sweep" as "sleep" results in George flipping out, thinking that Gwen broke up with him because she was cheating on him.
  • Lampshade Hanging: George is worried that Gwen, his Girl of the Week, might have broken up with him over seeing him eat messily on television. This leads to the following exchange:
Jerry: You really think she would be that superficial?
George: Why not? I would be.
  • Obfuscating Disability: Elaine fakes being deaf so that she doesn't have to make conversation with the driver of the car service. It doesn't work for very long. To quote Elaine: "He caught me hearing".
  • Pose of Silence: Parodied with George and Jerry hiding their mouths from Jerry's girlfriend, Laura, a deaf lip-reader, in order to talk about her while she is sitting at the same table. As it turned out, she knew exactly what they were saying anyway.
  • Reading Lips: The episode centers around this, with Jerry dating a deaf woman who misreads his saying "six" as "sex."
Jerry: So we'll swing by and pick you up. How about six? Six is good. You got a problem with six? … What? What
