Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 7 The Gathering Gloom

Go To

A ghoul disrupts a movie viewing party at a nearby graveyard. Velma automatically suspects the groundskeeper since his physical stature matches that of the ghoul, but the others chastise her for "villain profiling" without taking the proper investigative steps. The gang's investigation takes them to a cottage occupied by a family of Swedish girls whose specialties are meatballs and chocolate.

The episode provides examples of:

  • All Men Are Perverts: Fred and especially Shaggy are keen to investigate the cottage upon learning it's full of gorgeous Swedish girls. Though Shaggy might be more interested in the meatballs they keep serving them.
  • All Up to You: Scooby and Velma go it alone when the others are preoccupied.
  • Breather Episode: Overall, it's a pretty silly episode. Even the Previously on… segment is just a montage of Shaggy and Scooby eating rather than anything to do with the overarching plot.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Evallo states the reason for his villainy was just to prove how evil he is. His entire family is apparently like this.
  • The Cassandra: Velma spends the episode trying to convince everyone that an Obviously Evil man the Monster of the Week, but nobody besides Scooby listens, even when she points out that Evallo's application for a worker's permit was rejected because he was evil.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Mr. E balks at Pericles calling him by his real first name, though this is more because of how Pericles betrayed him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: We never met them, but apparently Evallo has brothers that even he considers "the worst." Though from the way he says it, this might be meant as a compliment.
  • Flashback: Mr. E recalls when he first met Professor Pericles, who crashed in his backyard. Young Ricky nursed him back to health, and the two became inseparable.
  • For the Evulz: The only reason Evallo came to Crystal Cove was just so he could carry out an evil plan.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The full text of Evallo's work permit application is pretty hilarious, as it claims that he has bad breath from never brushing his teeth once in his life and lists such dubiously vile misdeeds as wearing people's socks and getting them stinky before returning them to their drawers. It can seen here.
    • Panty Shot: Velma. It's the scene where she's holding onto Scooby and just before Scooby jumps the fence.

  • G-Rated Drug: Daphne is shown to have a crazed addiction to chocolate, to the point that she desperately chases after the Bjorklunds when it occurs to her that their leaving the country means they'll be taking all their chocolate with them.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Daphne is openly irritated by Fred's interest in the Swedish girls.
  • Karma Houdini: Evallo has diplomatic immunity so he gets to return to his country, much to Sheriff Stone's dismay as he's just lost his first correct arrest.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Walking through town by herself, Velma grouses about once again being the only one in the gang doing any actual work. Mr. E immediately pops out to commend her work ethic, which leads Velma to ask if he was just waiting for her to walk by this random spot. He immediately says he was.
    • As Velma tries to get Sheriff Stone's help, he points out the usual formula of how he arrests someone he's absolutely certain is guilty, only to learn the culprit was someone else. Scooby acknowledges how he's a terrible sheriff.
Stone: Sounds like the talking dog's been talking to my lawyer.
  • Monster of the Week: The Graveyard Ghoul, a zombielike creature that scares people away from the Crystal Cove cemetery.
  • Obviously Evil: Evallo. His full name is Count Evallo von Meanskrieg. His first name is a play on the word evil and his last name literally has the word mean in it. He also looks exactly like the goul, yells at the gang to leave the graveyard, growls at Velma, and stands around muttering to himself about "evil and whatnot". Because of this, the gang (except for Velma) and Sheriff Stone dismiss him as a suspect because he's too obvious. It's him after all.
  • Previously on…: Parodied. After Shaggy and Scooby say "Previously on Mystery Incorporated", it just shows a montage of scenes from previous episodes where Shaggy and Scooby stuff themselves.
  • Red Herring: Lampshaded. Fred and Sheriff Stone both comment on how it's never the most likely suspect. Except this time it really is the most obvious suspect.
  • Subverted Suspicion Aesop: It turns out Velma was right about Evallo being the culprit because he was the most likely suspect.
  • Team Rocket Wins: The culprit, whom Velma thought it was all along, Count Evallo, is released from custody claiming diplomatic immunity. It also robs Sheriff Stone of his first legitimate tag.
  • Tearing Through the Movie Screen: Mayor Nettles hosts a movie night at the cemetery to spark some support for her. It goes well... right up until a hideous ghoul tears the screen in half and scares away pretty much everyone.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Mr. E denounces Professor Pericles for his betrayal all those years ago and later reflects in private on how they used to be quite close.

Cassidy: Remember, all you listeners out there, something bad is going down at Crystal Cove. And by down, I mean underneath. Watch out for any foul play, especially of the feathered kind.
Pericles: Ahh, Cassidy. If we are to continue, she will need to be silenced forever.
Ricky: Agreed, forever.
