Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 12 Scarebear

Go To

A mutant bear is on the rampage in the toxic-tainted land near Destroido Corporation. Scooby and the gang are called to investigate as Destroido has declared itself its own sovereign state and is immune to any of Crystal Cove's laws. Lithium residue is found as Velma attempts to decrypt some files that were being downloaded, but a security guard arrives and is told by Mr. E (who seems to have a controlling interest in Destroido) of a security breach—Brad and Judy overheard the gang's plans to infiltrate the place and it was Mr. E's chance to detain them so he, Pericles and Fred's parents to could search for the three pieces of the Planispheric Disc the gang has.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: Crystal Cove's own addition, "Scarebear", he even has footage resembling the famous Patterson-Gimlin film.
  • Continuity Nod: Like in "When the Cicada Calls", a disgruntled associate of Destroido does a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax to lash out against Destroido's polluting modus operandi.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: The mutant owl has three extra eyes on its upper lip, along with a forked tongue and fangs.
  • Karma Houdini: Sheriff Stone can't take legal action against Destroido, because it's considered its own country.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Mr. E. threatens to get the kids arrested on trumped up charges, which is hypocritical/tragic given that the Freak doing this to him and his friends twenty years ago (and both did it for the Planispheric Disc) is ultimately what turned Ricky into Mr. E. today.
    • Mr. E. sets up a bomb to blow up Mystery Inc. Ironic given how in "The Creeping Creatures", Daphne warns Fred that the package from Mr. E. might be a bomb.
  • Meaningful Name: Benson Fuhrman. He even lampshades it.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: A whole bunch of them at Destroido's lab facilities, such as a giraffe/rooster, duckbilled giant frogs, a cat with human hands, and some tiny griffin-like mutant parakeets.
  • Monster of the Week: The Scarebear, a mutated monstrous bear stalking the polluted land around Destroido.
  • Mood Whiplash: Destroido's lab full of mutant animals is both humorous and horrifying.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Benson Fuhrman's voice sounds similar to Peter Lorre. There's a bit of Christopher Walken in his speech patterns, too.
  • Not Me This Time: The moment the bomb is revealed, Scarebear stops attacking to say, "Bomb? What bomb? I didn't set up any bomb!"
  • Police Are Useless:
    • For once, this is a good thing. Sheriff Stone and Mayor Nettles are already on the gang's side, so when Mr. E. says he has DVD proof of the gang breaking into Destroido, the duo invoke this trope by claiming that they don't have a DVD player, so therefore, they can't watch the DVD and thus there is no proof of the gang's crimes.
    • Justified at the end when Sheriff Stone can't take legal action against Destroido because it isn't in his jurisdiction — it's a different country.
  • Scooby-Dooby Doors: Averted. The gang runs into a hall with multiple doors on both sides, but only hide in one room while the Scarebear tears up the rest.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Sheriff Stone's exclamation of "Werner Herzog!" when attacked by the Scarebear is a reference to Grizzly Man, a documentary by Werner Herzog about a man who was eaten by a grizzly bear.
    • The spider-legged avocado resembles the spider-limbed creature from The Thing (1982).
    • Benson got his clawed gloves from a School for Gifted Youngsters.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Shaggy does a silent version of this. When Fred inspects a security door and mumbles about how it'd take him time to crack it open, Shaggy wordlessly pushes the door open, showing that it's already unlocked.
  • Time Bomb: Shaggy and Scooby-Doo discover a traditional example of one of these hidden in the Destroido corporation, complete with an alarm clock strapped to sticks of dynamite. Thanks to Fred's trapping skills, they are able to send the bomb sailing out of Destroido before it explodes, destroying George Avocados' farm in the process. We later learn Mr. E had planted the bomb to try and kill Mystery Inc.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Benson Fhurman became Scarebear because he wanted to expose Destroido's evils. The gang lets him go instead of having him arrested.
  • What You Are in the Dark: In the ending, Pericles and Mr. E. discuss this, wondering if Brad and Judy will be willing to betray their son.

Pericles: We must find another way. Perhaps somebody close who can betray the kinder without them ever seeing it coming.
Ricky: Of course. Brad and Judy.
Pericles: Question is, will they be willing to betray their only son?
