Go To

Tropes That Appear in This Episode

  • Best Friend: Johnny often cringes when Roland refers to him as his best friend, but in this episode, Roland proves that he is, in fact, Johnny's best friend.
  • Big Applesauce: Johnny, Stevie, and Roland journey to New York to pitch The Rosebud Motel Group to a group of venture capitalists.
  • Darkest Hour: Roland overhears the ACA board mocking Johnny and dresses them down. He's visibly depressed and it looks like we're heading for a Downer Ending before Ruth shows up to offer them a Hope Spot.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: It looks like the team aren't going to get their funding, but between Johnny nailing the pitch and Roland successfully admonishing the board, several of the junior partners offer to meet with them offscreen and give them their funding.
  • Evil Former Friend: Johnny's former assistant, Mike, got him the meeting with the venture capitalists, but didn't bother to show up. This is the first indicator that the capitalists have no intention of investing in Rosebud.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Not among the main cast, but among the partners at ACA. Several of the junior partners are fed up with the group passing on a lot of good ideas and are splitting off to start their own firm. They meet with the trio off-screen and agree to invest in Rosebud.
  • Group Hug: Everyone celebrates at the end, with only Patrick looking worried.
  • Heel Realization: Roland rips the board up one side and down the other for making fun of Johnny, praising him for his bravery at trying to make a new start, and as a good man, a good businessman, and a good friend. Several members of the board look ashamed after he's done.
  • The Load: Averted. It looks like Roland is going to bring down the team, but he proves his worth at the end.
  • Obsessed with Food: David offers half his muffin as a peace offering to Patrick.
  • Revealing Hug: A relatively soft version of this trope, but Patrick looks quite worried as he hugs everyone at the end.
  • The Smart Guy: Johnny shows that he has a lot of savvy when he absolutely nails the pitch, in contrast to Stevie's and Roland's nerves.
  • Smug Snake: Most of the venture capitalists are jerks who mock Johnny and have no intention of investing in Rosebud. Ruth later tells the trio that they've passed on a lot of good ideas, including Uber, and she and some of the junior partners are leaving to start their own firm because of it.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Roland overhears the venture capitalists making fun of Johnny and dresses them down. He's too nervous to speak up for himself, but how dare you insult his best friend.
  • Verbal Backspace: Moira may be doing this, or she may just be her usual Cloud Cuckoo Lander self.
Moira: David, your father needs all the help he can get.
    Johnny: "Help"?
    Moira: I said "support", dear.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Patrick gets very upset with David over the latter's eagerness to leave their home and move back to New York.
