"Beautiful flowers have thorns... Fooled you! I wasn't talking about me! Roses have thorns, but they're lovely and soothe the soul. You there! The one crushing the heart of flowers! I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(CWi Episode: "Thorny Weather")

To fortify the friendship between Chibi-usa and Hotaru, Usagi and Mamoru take girls out to a picnic near a botanical garden run by a kindly gardener. But a surprise storm forces the group to take shelter in his garden which has already been infested by Mimete and her Daimon.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Actually a Good Idea: Professor Tomoe allows Hotaru to partake in Chibi-usa's picnic as it'll give her some much needed entertainment due to him being unable to attend to her needs because of his work.
  • Age-Appropriate Angst: Kurebayashi doesn't take kindly to Usagi calling him an old man.
  • Artistic License – Engineering: When the storm shatters holes into the glass ceilings, Kurebayashi gets the bright idea to use boards of wood to cover the holes. Holes from a glass panel with metal framing.
  • Badass Family: Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask and Chibi Moon work together to defeat U-Baulla.
  • Badass in Distress: Unfortunately, the three end up being overpowered by the Daimon's binding roots.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": U-Baulla says this to Kurebayashi after he criticizes her lackluster petals.
  • Call-Back: Chibi-usa is frightened by the storm's thunder.
  • Caring Gardener: A rare male example. Yoshiki Kurebayashi is a botanist who's done intensive research in regards to roses and how to improve their development. In his downtime, he likes to work at his botany garden and tend to the other plants in his care.
  • Continuity Nod: Tying back to the last episode, Hotaru tries to avoid Chibi-usa while Usagi recalls Haruka's warning about her.
  • Dramatic Thunder: The skies rage with thunder as Hotaru considers leaving Chibi-usa again along with Mimete getting closer and closer to attacking.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: After U-Baulla's summoning, Kurebayashi takes the time to critique her petals saying that she was given too much fertilizer.
  • Dub Name Change: The Cloverway dub renamed Kurebayashi “Kenny”.
  • Evil Knockoff: Tuxedo Mask calls U-Baulla a cheap imitation for using his rose attack.
  • Good-Times Montage: Upon their arrival to the garden, Usagi and the gang enjoy their time there by playing games and taking pictures.
  • Half-Truth: Mamoru brushes off Mimete by informing her that he's spending the day with his wife and daughter. He says this despite not being legally married to Usagi in the present mixed with Chibi-usa having not been conceived yet.
  • Happy Ending: Kurebayashi is comforted by his wife and kids and Chibi-usa is able to continue her friendship with Hotaru.
  • Happy Flashback: Hotaru thinks back to how happy she and her parents were after she sees Chibi-usa making a scene with Usagi and Mamoru in a toy store.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: After the Daimon's demise, Uranus and Neptune comment that they could feel an intense power throughout the battle.
  • Noodle Incident: To Usagi's irritation, Mamoru had a habit of bringing lovely ladies to visit Kurebayashi's botanical garden in the past.
  • Picnic Episode: Chibi-usa gets the idea to invite Hotaru out on a picnic with Usagi and Mamoru as their chaperones.
  • Plant Person: The Briar Daimon, U-Baulla, resembles a pink woman with a yellow rose motif.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: As much as she'd love to summon her Daimon on Mamoru to satisfy her own temptations, Mimete decides to go after the victim her superior chose for her to stay in his good graces.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Mamoru introduces Usagi and Chibi-Usa as his wife and daughter from the future to Mimet.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Mimete presents a potted pitfall trap plant to Mamoru while asking him what type of plant it is. Pitfall traps are a type of carnivorous plants known to lure insects with it's sweet smells to capture and feast on them. Much like Mimete herself.
  • The Spiny: U-Baulla covers herself in giant red thorns and tries to give the Sailor Guardians a hug of death.
  • The Stakeout: From a distance, the Outer Guardians have begun to watch over Hotaru to determine if she's in league with the enemy.
  • Too Many Babies: Kurebayashi has a total of seven kids. His wife appears in the end with a bun in the oven.
  • Villainesses Want Heroes: After getting a good glimpse at the fairly handsome Mamoru, Mimete shows attraction to him and considers sending her Daimon after him over the older Kurebayashi.
  • Vine Tentacles: After getting her arms chopped off by Tuxedo Mask, U-Baulla creates roots from her limbs which allows her to create a living root system that binds the heroes.
  • Villainous Rescue: Implied. Hotaru's other self awakens and saps the life energy from U-Baulla. This gives Sailor Moon the chance to escape, transform and destroy her.
  • Wheel o' Feet: Usagi and Chibi-usa get these when the former starts to chase the latter after unintentionally hurting her during their game of leapfrog.
  • Wingding Eyes: Usagi gets hearts in her eyes after Mamoru openly tells the weed woman that she's his wife.
