Hondo's old friend Leroy asks Hondo to look out for his son, Darryl, after the boy was a witness to a drive-by shooting. Meanwhile, Luca struggles to deal with his emotions following the death of his grandfather, who was one of the original members of S.W.A.T.

- Bait-and-Switch: Street spends most of the episode trying to hook up with the cinematographer making a film about Luca's grandfather at S.W.A.T., only to get rebuffed at the end of the episode. With no plans, he asks Chris if she wants to hang out after work, only for Chris to tell him she has a date and leave the building with the cinematographer, to Street's astonishment and Tan's amusement.
- Friends Are Chosen, Family Aren't: Luca was not on speaking terms with his grandfather when the old man died. When Hondo asks why, Luca explains he was furious at his grandfather's racist attitude in believing a black officer had no business being in charge of a SWAT team, to the point of trying to get Luca transferred to Mumford's team when Hondo was given command. Luca also admits not telling this to his father out of fear that he'd agree with the sentiment.
- Living Legend: Luca's grandfather Jack, having been one of the original S.W.A.T. team members, was considered this by the LAPD.
- Noble Bigot: Invoked by Hondo about Luca's grandfather to helping Luca process his grief over the loss; his grandfather might have had antiquated views, but he was a good cop who saved a lot of lives.
