Recap / SMG4 - Mario Goes To Ohio

Go To

Mario wanders into the most bizarre place imaginable... Ohio

Mario and Tari are eager for their road trip to Texas. Unfortunately, they end up boarding the wrong cab, which takes them straight to... Ohio.

  • Ambiguously Human: Many of the Ohioans may look human, but whether they are human or not is clearly up for debate, as their proportions stretch wildly and they act very monstrous.
  • Bait-and-Switch: One of the Ohio locals Tari talks to screeches out a Glass-Shattering Sound, cue a montage of numerous windows shattering before cutting to an annoyed guy holding a glass bottle, only for his head to shatter instead.
  • Black Speech: The Ohioans seem to have a language that consists of screaming and various other loud noises.
  • The Bus Came Back: This episode sees Tari return to the spotlight for the first time since the conclusion of Meta Runner, after having been relegated to cameos in both the main series and Mario Does Things after "Into the Marioverse".
  • Cloudcuckooland: Ohio is incredibly weird even by SMG4 standards, and that's really saying something. Absolutely nothing makes sense, from the locals to the physics. There's even a backdoor to the Backrooms.
  • Continuity Nod: SMG4 is still heavily obsessed with making "the best video ever" after what happened in the last video.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Mario grabs a jar of peanut butter while he and Tari were hiding in the dumpster. Since Ohio has a... unique set of rules, this works as an escape route to Texas.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The Ohioans go after Mario and Tari after Tari grabs Mario by the arm to leave.
  • Equippable Ally: When trying to fend off the demon Ohioans, Mario initially holds Tari like a bat, before using her as a gun to fire out a Candice joke.
  • Human Resources: Of a sort. The people on the cabbage farm that were turned into cabbages are violently ground up for "cabbage milk", which the Ohioans use to clone themselves.
  • Magic Potion: The "cabbage milk" the farmer's grinder produces results in the drinker having a clone of themselves spontaneously appear.
  • Ninja Prop: Mario and Tari notice the crime stars in the corner of the screen, with Tari scaredly asking what they did wrong.
  • Oh, Crap!: Once Tari realizes that she and Mario are in Ohio, she freaks out.
  • Percussive Maintenance: When the farmer's grinder stops working, he attempts to fix it by mashing all of the buttons, repeatedly hitting it with a crowbar, then firing several shotgun rounds into the side of it. Somehow, this works.
  • Place Worse Than Death: Mario and Tari accidentally visit Ohio, with it being depicted as a dark, ghetto-like location with some very strange, very unfriendly locals.
  • Refusal of the Call: SMG4 is still working on his "best video ever" from last week, and thus declines to join Mario and Tari on the trip.
  • Riddle for the Ages: How is Tari familiar with Ohio being so batcrap insane?
  • Transformation Sequence: Played for Laughs. When Mario and Tari are backed into a corner, there's a sequence of Mario growing wheels on his hands and feet, turning into "da mario car."
    performance f***ed up
  • What's a Henway?: Mario pulls this on some Ohioans to dispatch them, with the help of Tari pulling a Candice joke. Unfortunately for him, a car (with Heavy as the axle, and the voice of Scout) pulls this on him immediately afterwards.
  • Wrong Turn at Albuquerque: The plot of the episode kicks off when the taxi driver cuts through Ohio and folds himself into the radio.

Candice and Joe

To get away from the oncoming Ohioans, Mario repurposes Tari into a weapon... that only says "Candice". This allows Mario to pull a henway joke to dispatch their attackers. But right after, a car gets him back by asking after "Joe".

How well does it match the trope?
