Recap / SMG4 - AREA 64

Go To

You are about to join Mario and enter area 64. Where Nintendo’s darkest secrets and mysteries are held. Have fun…

Wanting an excuse to get into Bowser’s new spaghetti pool, Mario gives him an Nintendo 64DD he found in a dumpster for his birthday. However, Bowser soon gets kidnapped by the military over the peripheral, and Mario is forced to rescue him from Area 64, a facility holding secrets and oddities from Nintendo’s past.

Tropes:

  • Call-Back: The decoy Bowser the military sends to distract his minions is Bowsur from "Welcome To The Kushroom Mingdom".
  • Cassandra Truth: Bowser immediately tells Sarge that Mario was the one who gave him the 64DD, but Sarge believes Mario is too stupid to have done that.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The 64DD that caused Bowser to get kidnapped is ultimately used to defeat Sarge.
  • Combining Mecha: Nintendoom is basically a Mecha suit made entirely of Nintendo consoles.
  • Groin Attack: An interesting variation; Mario defeats Sarge and Nintendoom by attaching the 64DD to the mech’s… lower regions, and inserting the infamous live-action Mario movie into it, causing Nintendoom to short circuit from the movie’s badness.
  • Never My Fault: After Beta Luigi gets sucked into a black hole, Mario declares vengeance on the guards and goes on the offensive to avenge him… despite the fact Mario was the one who summoned the black hole by breaking a Stop ‘n’ Swap egg.
  • Not Quite Dead: The ending reveals that Beta Luigi managed to survive, and the black hole somehow transported him into a skill crane game on SMG4’s Game Boy.
  • Skewed Priorities: Mario only decides to go after the kidnapped Bowser just so he can tell him the location of the spaghetti pool. He almost leaves Bowser behind once he gets the information he needs before Bowser calls him out on it.
