Go To

The twenty-seventh episode of the sixth season of Rugrats (1991).

Chuckie's New Shirt

Chuckie doesn't feel like himself when he has to wear a different shirt.

Cavebabies

The babies pretend to be cavepeople as they hunt for a cookie jar.

"Chuckie's New Shirt" provides examples of:

  • Blind Without 'Em: When Chas looks for Chuckie after he returns from the store, Dil knocks off his glasses. Chas can't see very well without his glasses, but when Chuckie walks up to him to give him a hug, Chas still recognizes him without his glasses, even if Chuckie isn't wearing his favorite shirt.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Didi and Betty taste-test the banana nut cake Chas is entering for his company's annual bake-off, Didi tries to be nice, saying the cake has an interesting texture, but Betty is more upfront, spitting the cake out and asking Chas if he left the peel on.
  • Clothing Damage: When Chuckie tries to retrieve Tommy's ball after it gets tossed into a bush, his shirt gets caught on a branch, which rips a hole in it. Dil later grabs Chuckie's shirt and pulls on it, making the hole even bigger.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Chuckie in his new "Ralph" persona decides to stop being friends with Tommy, Phil, and Lil, he tells them that he's just going to go home with Chas when he returns from the store. Tommy then asks Chuckie if Chas might not even be his father anymore, and Chuckie admits that he didn't think about that.
  • Iris Out: This episode ends with one on Chuckie's new shirt as the chocolate cake Chuckie eats splatters on it.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Played with; after Chuckie's favorite shirt gets ripped, Chas buys Chuckie some new different shirts to wear. Chuckie eventually settles on wearing a white tank-top, but he doesn't feel like himself in it. At the end of the episode, Chas gets Chuckie a new shirt identical to his old one and reveals that he bought six more just like it.
  • Spraying Drink from Nose: Discussed; when the babies try to play with Chuckie in his new "Ralph" persona, Lil brings up the time when Chuckie drew a picture of Angelica with no hair, then laughed so hard, grape juice squirted out his nose.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Chuckie is revealed to dislike prunes in this episode.
  • That Man Is Dead: When Chuckie starts wearing a white tank top, he feels more like a "Ralph" than a Chuckie, and when the babies bring up all the good times they had with Chuckie, Chuckie tells them that Chuckie isn't here anymore, and that they better forget about him and get used to playing with Ralph. At the end of the episode, Phil laments that they won't get to play with "Ralph" anymore.

"Cavebabies" provides examples of:

  • Kids Hate Vegetables: Angelica is shown to dislike spinach in this episode.
  • Greens Precede Sweets: Angelica wants to eat cookies for dinner, but Didi tells Angelica she can't have any cookies until she finishes her spinach. Angelica finds this unfair, and tells Didi that Grandpa Lou always sneaks a few cookies from the cookie jar before dinner. When Didi finds out, she hides the cookie jar, and Angelica makes the babies find said cookie jar for her.
  • Imagine Spot: The babies imagine themselves as cavebabies in prehistoric times as they search for the cookie jar.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Angelica makes the babies get the cookie jar for her under the promise that she'll give each of them a cookie from it. When the babies get her the cookie jar, she goes back on her word and keeps the cookies for herself. Didi catches Angelica eating the cookies and makes her eat the rest of her spinach as punishment.
  • Malaproper: When Tommy tells the other babies about prehistoric times, he mispronounces words, such as "Pre-story"note , "Terrydogtail"note , and "Ice Page"note .
  • Tempting Cookie Jar: Angelica's desire for cookies is what leads Didi to hide the cookie jar from her, and she makes the babies find it. Grandpa Lou is also revealed to have been sneaking cookies from the jar before dinner, which is why he's also looking for the cookie jar. He was even willing to overlook the incident if Angelica would share with him (she didn't).
