Recap / Rockos Modern Life S 2 E 7 Hut Sut Raw Kiss Me Im Foreign

Go To

The seventh episode of the second season of Rocko's Modern Life.

Hut Sut Raw

Rocko, Filburt and Heffer go camping, and run into trouble when Rocko insists on "roughing it".

Kiss Me, I'm Foreign

Filburt marries Rocko to protect his wallaby friend from being wrongfully deported.

"Hut Sut Raw" provides examples of:

  • Astronomic Zoom: While Rocko, Heffer and Filburt are trying to make their way out of the forest, Filburt proclaims, "We're lost!" The camera suddenly cuts back farther and farther until it's in space. At which point, Rocko says, "Maybe we are lost."
  • Bowdlerise: Reruns and DVDs cut out the part where it's implied that Rocko picked a bear's testicles.
  • Camping Episode: In this episode, Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt go camping in the O-Town National Forest. Rocko insits on being able to rough it, but to his horror, the O-Town National Forest has been modernized with things like vending machines and television sets.
  • Dissension Remorse: Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt suffer from lack of food during their camping trip, which eventually results in Heffer and Filburt arguing over who gets to eat Rocko. Immediately, Rocko steps in and tells them that friends don't eat each other. Cue Heffer and Filburt ending their conflict and sharing a hug as they break down in tears.
  • Going in Circles: When trying to head back to civilization, Rocko, Heffer, and Filbert end up getting lost in this manner. Lampshaded by Filbert:
Filbert: These rocks look awfully familiar.
  • Groin Attack: While picking berries, Rocko suddenly disturbs a bear behind a bush, who runs away with its paws covering its groin. The clear implication is that Rocko accidentally picked one of the bear's testicles. This scene has since been cut from reruns and DVDs.
  • Horrible Camping Trip: When Rocko gets fed up with the 'civilized' camping sites and wants to rough it. It gets rough for the trio, all right.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Rocko claiming that indoor camping is "for lightweights (Rocko and Skinny Filburt), sissies (Rocko, Heffer and Filburt), fat tourists (Heffer and Fat Filburt) and couch potatoes (Rocko, Heffer and Filburt)" and that he, Heffer and Filburt "are none of those things".
  • Meat-O-Vision: Lost in the woods and starving, the Comic Trio begin to see each other as steak (Heffer) turtle soup (Filburt) and a drumstick (Rocko).
  • Nature Tinkling: Comes up when Filburt informs Rocko that he needs to use the bathroom and Rocko responds by pointing towards a bush. Filburt is so disgusted by the idea of peeing behind a bush that he chooses to hold it instead.
  • No Animals Were Harmed: This episode ends with a note that says "No shrews were harmed in the making of this episode."
  • Potty Emergency: Due to refusing to nature tinkle, Filbert ends up holding it for a good deal of the episode. He doesn't get relief until the trio are back home.

"Kiss Me, I'm Foreign" provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When the deportation worker shows up at Rocko's house, he says a mistake has been made: Rocko doesn't have to leave in a week...he has to leave now. There's even an airplane parked outside his house.
  • Better as Friends: A non-romantic variant. Rocko and Filburt both agree at the end that they don't want to stay married (even if it could get Rocko deported) because it's ruining their friendship.
  • Black Comedy: Filburt uses a Squirrel Away grenade to get rid of a couple of squirrels living in his shell. It actually kills them, and their ghosts floating up to heaven look like roadkill. Then they kiss.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Because Filburt's not wearing his glasses during the wedding ceremony, he's looking the wrong way during the vows and the judge needs to snap her fingers to get him looking her way.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: A random rabbit does Filburt's "Turn the page, wash your hands" shtick in the comic book store.
  • Citizenship Marriage: Due to a mixup, Rocko ends up losing his legal citizenship. In order for him to stay, Filburt offers to pretend to be Rocko's fiancĂ©e, Ophelia. Of course, this causes a bit of tension between Dr. Hutchison and Filburt because both of them aren't happy about the fake marriage.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Filburt brings up Dr. Hutchison's previous job as a surgeon.
    • A customer at Kind-of-A-Lot-O-Comics does Filburt's "turn the page, wash your hands" routine from the first episode.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Just as Rocko and Filburt are getting fed up with their Citizenship Marriage, the deportation worker comes over to Rocko's house and gives him his green card.
  • Harsh Word Impact: During Rocko and Filburt's squabble, their insults towards each other come out as boxing gloves tied to their tongues.
  • Housewife: Filburt acts like a stereotypical one (apron and all) during his time as Rocko's fake wife. When he starts to get mad at Rocko for "neglecting" him, he acts like a boorish husband.
  • The Hyena: When he isn't trying to hold it back (barely) the deportation worker is constantly laughing like a madman. The only time he stops snickering is after the only other guest at the wedding of Rocko and "Ophelia" shushes him.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: When the deportation worker comes to the door: "WHAT IN THE HELLoooo..."
  • Lazily Gender-Flipped Name: Heffer tries to claim Rocko is getting married to "Filburta", but Filburt chooses the fake name "Ophelia".
  • Love at First Sight: The deportation worker and the judge when they end up meeting while buying Squirrel-Away.
  • Mistaken Identity: Rocko actually was a legal citizen, but the mess was caused because the deportation worker mixed him up with a guy named "Rocky" (who doesn't even look remotely like Rocko). Despite the audience knowing this, the misunderstanding is never cleared up.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Filburt finds Dr. Hutchison working as a pharmacist in this episode.
Filburt: Hey, I thought you were a surgeon.
Dr. Hutchison: I was, but I just couldn't cut it. (laughs)
  • Pair the Spares: The judge and the deportation worker get married near the end.
  • Reaching Between the Lines: When the judge calls Filburt for the final time, he screams at her to quit calling. She then tosses the phone into his face over the divider.
  • Sinister Surveillance: The deportation worker is constantly watching Rocko and Filburt to make sure that they're actually married and in love.
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: The squirrels after Filburt kills them with a Squirrel Away grenade.
