The teams head to France for the next leg of the race. There, they must fight sharks and build sandcastles, before racing to Iceland via speedboat.

- Bait-and-Switch Comment: How Don reveals to the Surfer Dudes that they're only second-to-last and thus still in the game.
- Bland-Name Product: MacDonnell's, as mentioned by Dwayne while trying to bribe Don with coupons, is a parody of fast-food chain restaurant McDonald's.
- Camera Abuse: During an interview, Dwayne accidently punches the camera, breaking it.
- Comically Small Bribe: Dwayne tries to bribe Don into not giving him and Dwayne Jr. a penalty with coupons. The first was for 25ยข off Eggie Muffins, the second was expired.
- Complexity Addiction: What causes The Geniuses' elimination: they spent so long calculating the perfect sandcastle that by the time they finally got around to building it, all the other teams had made it to Iceland.
- Dramatic Irony: Brody and Geoff leave the beach thinking their the last ones. Cue Mary poking her head up from her and Ellody's planning, thinking she heard something.
- Friendship Moment: With them being way behind the other teams, Brody blames himself and dreads being responsible for them getting eliminated. Though disappointed by that prospect, Geoff assures him that they win and lose as a team.
- Graceful Loser: Thinking they've come in last, the Surfer Dudes say they've made peace with it and just tell Don to get their elimination over with. However, Don tells them they're second-to-last. Also applies to Mary and Ellody, who take their loss in stride and even crack a joke at it.
- Harmless Electrocution: Downplayed when Brody is forced to act as a power conductor for his and Geoff's speedboat to get it to move faster. He's shown to be burnt up and debilitated, but otherwise alive.
- Not So Above It All:
- The Geniuses make fun of the Fashion Bloggers' fake tans.
- After telling The Geniuses that they're out, Don talks about how cool it is to ride around in a helicopter.
- Pet the Dog: After Geoff tells Don to get their elimination over with, thinking he and Brody arrived last, Don happily tells them they're only second-to-last, hence still in the race.
- Plot Hole: Emma & Kitty are building their sandcastle when they are first seen at the beach. However, a later scene shows Emma taking the Botch or Watch.
- Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the song "Subterranean Homesick Blues" by Bob Dylan.
- Series Continuity Error: Rockers are seen getting their first Travel Tip before the Sisters. But in the previous episode, Sisters ranked 10th while Rockers ranked 15th.
- Shout-Out:
- Don reenacts the Coppertone logo when his swimsuit is grabbed by a crab.
- MacArthur's improbable parking skills are a reference to a scene from The Blues Brothers. This is further backed up by her mentioning that she once saw this being performed in a movie.
- Threatening Shark: The first part of the challenge requires a team member to swim out into the ocean and grab a card from the back fin of a shark. Brody spends most of the challenge being chased (and eventually eaten) by one.
- Worth It: Jen claims that her and Tom's penalty was given to them for not arriving to the south of France by train because Don was jealous that they got to party with the prince of Monaco on a yacht.
- Writers Cannot Do Math: Father & Son (Dwayne & Junior) and Fashion Bloggers' (Tom & Jen) penalties end at the same time, even though Fashion Bloggers got theirs later and both of their penalties were twenty minutes long.
