Recap / Resident Alien S 2 E 8 Alien Dinner Party

Go To

A reptilian-eyed sniper shoots David Logan during his covert meeting with General McAllister. The carnivorous baby hatches and escapes while Ben won't take no for an answer regarding Harry's birthday party. All secrets held by Ben, D'Arcy, and Kate come out. Mike makes peace with Jesse's death while Liv becomes certain of alien activity in Patience. Max and Sahar journey to the cabin to tell Asta that Dr. Ethan was taken by The Men in Black. The power is cut and Dan is tasked with barring everyone from leaving the cabin. Goliath has a message for Harry, but unfortunately, so does the man who tasked the original Harry with murdering Sam Hodges.

Tropes:

  • Bavarian Fire Drill: Ellen uses her scrubs to look like she needs whatever she's stealing for an emergency situation, as no store wants to be blamed for impeding care.
Ellen: I'm serious. If you're wearing nurse scrubs and you're running, stores will pretty much let you take anything for free.
  • Bickering Couple, Peaceful Couple: Brought into focus in this episode. While Ben and Kate have a public argument about a variety of secrets they'd been keeping from each other, it's smooth sailing for Liv and John.
  • Blatant Lies: Kate saying that she also meant frogs when she said she liked getting peed on.
  • Cliffhanger: All of the main ensemble's secrets are revealed (minus The Masquerade), Harry is shot, Asta has killed his shooter, D'Arcy stumbles onto the scene, the carnivorous alien baby is on the loose, and there's another alien race trying to take over Earth.
  • False Friend: What Kate accuses D'Arcy of being after learning that she kissed Ben and didn't tell Kate about it.
  • Food as Bribe: Liv gets to hear Ben's secrets because she buys Sheriff Mike bear claws each morning.
  • Free-Range Children: Ellen actively permits this, telling her elementary-schooler charges they just need to be back before their parents come home.
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: D'Arcy regifts one of Ben's candles to Harry while Ben is right there.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Max and Sahar's reactions are shown instead when the alien devours the raccoon. Somewhat subverted by showing the resulting skeleton.
  • Gruesome Grandparent: Liv's grandma still hates her for stealing her deviled eggs recipe when she was ten.
  • His Name Is...: Goliath is about to reveal which aliens are planning to take over Earth when Harry gets shot.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Having decided to go sober only a few hours prior, D'Arcy wordlessly pours herself red wine when Kate confronts her about kissing Ben.
  • Idiot Ball:
    • Max actually thought that Dr. Ethan just coincidentally left town the same night that he told The Men in Black that Ethan was an alien. It takes Sahar to point out that they obviously captured him.
    • Mike chimes in to "help" vouch for Ben's innocence, except the argument wasn't about D'Arcy kissing Ben; Kate only learns about that because Mike mentions it.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Ben claims he didn't tell anybody about the resort. Mike and Liv immediately mention that they knew about it (and the kiss, too).
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Max tells Sahar that Dr. Ethan isn't the town doctor anymore. Because he left town the same night that Max told The Men in Black that he was an alien. From which Sahar immediately discerns the incredibly obvious fact that Dr. Ethan was taken by them.
    • Everything that Ben, D'Arcy and Kate have been hiding since the end of the first season and throughout the first half of this one is exposed to everyone at Harry's party.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Kate and Ben are Overcome with Desire in Harry's bathroom.
  • Newhart Phonecall: Ellen has one with an unknown friend or associate in which she implies that she uses her status as a nurse to commit acts of petty shoplifting and also reveals that Mayor Ben is hosting a surprise party for Harry to try to get him to return to being the town doctor. This last is overheard by Sahar, leading her to realize that Ethan Stone was kidnapped by the Men in Black.
  • Off the Wagon: D'Arcy quit drinking. Unfortunately, her resolve only lasts four hours.
  • Retirony: David Logan is in the process of negotiating himself an exit ticket from the Men in Black life when the sniper shoots him.
  • Stalker Shot: The reptilian sniper shown to be the one shooting at the Logan/McAllister meeting.
  • Stereo Fibbing: Max and Sahar supply different reasons for sneaking outside. Thankfully, Ellen doesn't care.
  • Stripped to the Bone: The raccoon that the alien baby devours.
  • Taken for Granite When the alien, "Goliath," died, his body crystallized in a standing position, making him resemble a statue.
  • Wham Episode: David Logan is shot by an alien and possibly killed, taking the last alien ball with him. The hybrid baby is loose. Kate is pregnant. Ben and D'Arcy's secrets are revealed to whoever didn't know. Another alien race is looking to take over the Earth. Harry gets shot and D'Arcy stumbles onto the scene just after Asta shoots and kills Harry's attacker.
  • Worth It: Deputy Liv agrees with D'Arcy Bloom's assessment that it was worth it for Liv to have stolen her grandmother's deviled egg recipe, even though her grandmother's hated her for it since she was ten and has said she wants to die soon so that she can come back as a ghost and steal Liv's soul.
