Recap / Regular Show S 06 E 25 Not Great Double Date

Go To

After the events of "1000th Chopper Flight Party," CJ comes over to forgive Margaret for what happened then (and what happened on "Merry Christmas, Mordecai") and invites her on a double date with her boyfriend, Del the weather man. Trouble is, Margaret lied about Del being her boyfriend so she could calm CJ down from her rage — and must keep up the masquerade with the help of Del himself and Rigby's outlandish story of how they met.

Episode tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When confronting Margaret about the truth, CJ brings another part up: Does Margaret still have feelings for Mordecai? This stuns the crowd watching them, and especially Mordecai. And this takes Margaret aback, hesitating to answer at first.
  • Becoming the Mask: Del eventually gets so far into the role of Margaret's boyfriend that he begins to concoct increasingly-ridiculous memories and fantasies of their "relationship".
  • Bowdlerization: In the UK and Southeast Asia versions of this episode, the Dump Cam is changed from a toilet to a garbage can.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Margaret has one in the beginning, which corresponds with the events that happened in the 1000th Chopper Flight Party.
  • A Day In The Lime Light: Margaret is the main character in this episode.
  • Downer Ending: After coming clean that she still has feelings for Mordecai and lied about having a boyfriend, Margaret loses her chance at CJ being her friend, Mordecai runs out on her, and Del the weather man (who admitted that he liked her) dumps her, leaving Margaret alone and depressed at the sports bar. Of course, the last part was Del still acting when he comes back says "And scene".
  • Fake Relationship: Margaret asks Del the weather man to fake being her boyfriend during a double date.
  • Fanfiction : Rigby "just whipped up" several pages on how Del and Margaret met, and Margaret thinks his story about meeting in the jungle is too complicated, but Del's immediately on board. This is the cover story she and Del use to Mordecai and CJ to keep up the charade.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: Mordecai is completely unphased by Del and Margaret's fake story of how they met.
CJ: Wow! That's a really crazy story!
Mordecai: I don't know, that kind of stuff happens to me all the time.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The backstories that Rigby provides are in the form of a screenplay, and mentions that Margaret is "kinda hot."
  • Friendship Moment: There is a small scene right before things go down hill that shows that outside of the relationship drama, CJ and Margaret could be good friends.
  • Hope Spot: Margaret and CJ seem to be starting a budding friendship at the pool table, and all appears to go well. But then the restaurant DJ starts a kiss cam screen that lands on Margaret and Del, who tries to kiss her, which makes Margaret burst out that Del's not actually her boyfriend.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Margaret states that she felt she had to lie about having a boyfriend or CJ would kill everyone.
  • Lampshade Hanging: The fake story of how Margaret and Del met gets crazier and crazier, but when CJ says basically that Mordecai comments that stuff like that happens to him all the time.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: CJ upon finding out that Margaret isn't really dating Del.
CJ: So let me get this straight! You're single, you dated Mordecai for a while, and you keep trying to hang out with him, [starts to turn stormy] even though you don't have to, cause it's not like you kept in touch with him after you left! [starts crackling electricity, but composes herself] All of those things are fine. [sighs] Except that you lied about it.
  • Liar Revealed: It turns out that Margaret actually was NOT dating Del, and she just said that so she wouldn't die. She tries to keep up the lie, but she eventually caved in and admits the truth to CJ, much to her fury.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Margaret is devastated on the damage her lying has done. CJ now probably hates her more than ever, even after they seemed to have ended their animosity, and Mordecai doesn't give Margaret any sympathy. This all leaves her to sulk at her table in regret and depression.
  • Previously on…: The episode begins with a brief recap of the climax of "1000th Chopper Flight Party."
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: When CJ storms out of the restaurant after finding out the truth, Mordecai runs out after her. Whether it's because he goes after her to comfort her or he doesn't want anything to do with Margaret at the moment is unknown.
  • Seen It All: After Margaret told her fake story on how she and Del met and feel in love, CJ was in awe on how crazy it was. However, Mordecai simply responses that stuff like that happens to him all of the time.
  • Wham Line: When Margaret is asked if she still has romantic feelings for Mordecai.

    Margaret: I think… I do.
