Recap / Regular Show S 06 E 17 Happy Birthday Song Contest

Go To

Mordecai and Rigby have yet another craving for cake and find that they can win a year supply by entering a song contest where the best newest birthday song wins. However just as they're about to perform, the creator of the original birthday song, Happy Birthday, appears to reclaim his spot.

This episode has the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Muscle Man lets out what seems to be a very, very long fart, but then he says it was just his new leather boots that he's still breaking in.
  • Continuity Nod: To "Free Cake". Also the holder of the contest, Farmer Jimmy, is the same guy from the Thanksgiving special.
  • Happy Birthday to You!: Farmer Jimmy's not a fan of the song and so created the contest in order to find a song to replace it. But then the anthropomorphic personification of this song interrupts the contest, and even interrupts himself at various points to invoke this. He does sing the full version along with the crowd, however. The crew was worried about not having the song without paying, but then realized that, since Time Warner owned off this show and the song (at the time), they were allowed to use it.
  • Plot-Based Voice Cancellation: Every time Mordecai and Rigby perform their song, it's drowned out by a loud noise. It's not until they perform it at the contest that we get to hear it.
  • The Power of Rock: Not surprisingly it comes down to a song battle between Mordecai and Rigby and Happy Birthday. The former wins with their catchier version.
