Recap / Recess S 4 E 36 Soccer Boy

Go To

During a big soccer game, Mikey fails to obtain a good position with his team, so he joins Lawson's team instead.

Tropes:

  • Combat Pragmatist: Kurst the Worst body slams Mikey in an attempt to keep him from stopping her team from scoring. He still manages to stop the ball though.
    • One of the Diggers digs a pit trap on the field, but is reprimanded by Jordan and Jerome.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: TJ, Vince, and Spinelli easily defeat the Ashleys due to the latter team's goalie being constantly distracted by phone calls.
  • Dirty Coward: Gelman refuses to catch the soccer ball as goalie, and he leaves because of this.
  • Embarrassing First Name: It’s from Mikey that we learn that Lawson's first name is Erwin.
  • Foreshadowing: Lawson's team name "The Winning Guys" proves to be a Meaningful Name by the end of the episode.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Gelman seems to be this to Lawson's gang.
  • Hidden Depths: As scorekeepers, Gus and Gretchen can create a state-of-the-art (for 1997-98 at least) scoreboard.
    • Not to mention that Jocko went to soccer camp and knows the tricks of the trade to soccer.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
Vince: If Lawson wins, we're gonna look like dummies.
TJ: Ooh! Don't wanna look like no dummies!
  • It's All About Me: Vince is too concerned about the trophy to allow Mikey to play with his team, and his selfish nature really comes back to haunt him and the Viper Sharks in the final. After bringing Spinelli out of the goal, Vince, Spinelli and T.J. easily beat Lawson's lousy defense, leaving Lawson sobbing on the pitch and creating a three-on-none break at the goal. However, rather than pass to T.J. or Spinelli in front of an open net (as Mikey would have no chance to cover all of them), Vince's selfish nature wins out and he takes the shot from the edge of the box. Mikey has enough time to make the save, cueing a massive Oh, Crap! from Vince, T.J. and Spinelli as Mikey punts into the open net at the other end of the pitch.
  • Pet the Dog: Upon enlisting him as goalie, Lawson is genuinely nice to Mikey. He even invites Mikey to his victory party once his team wins. But Mikey declines this invitation to be with his friends.
  • Sixth Ranger: Willy and an unnamed girl frequently seen in the background are recruited to play for Vince's team.
