She scatters... not so kindly.
Directed by Monty Oum

"Thus kindly I scatter."
— The grave's epitaph

The first promotional trailer for Rooster Teeth's web series, RWBY.

After visiting a cliff-side grave, a young girl is attacked by a pack of shadowy monsters, which she fights by using a scythe/sniper rifle hybrid weapon.

Tropes in this trailer include:

  • Anchored Attack Stance: To use the scythe as a pure gun, she anchors the scythe blade in the ground, and begins firing shots into the charging horde of monsters. She can also use this position to stand on the blade, and fire the gun with her feet. She later uses the powerful recoil to speed up her charge into the pack.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Ruby decimates a huge pack of Beowolves, cutting them half, decapitating them, and severing limbs. There is no blood. Instead, the creatures seem to disslove into red rose petals that drift away on the wind.
  • Boom, Headshot!: When the Beowolves first attack Ruby, she leaps high into the air grabs her weapon and shoots. Her first shot takes out half the head of one of the Beowolves.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ruby is walking alone through a forest when she's attacked by a horde of Beowolves. Despite the overwhelming numbers, the entire trailer consists of Ruby slaughtering all of the Beowolves while they can barely touch her.
  • Establishing Series Moment: Monty wanted to design a fighting show centred on four girls who are training in a combat school to fight monsters and look really cool while doing so. The vast majority of the Red Trailer is nothing more than a display of Monty's fighting animation involving a girl using an awesome weapon to slaughter monsters.
  • Foreshadowing: The speed at which she fights the beasts during the climax is a hint that she has other abilities the trailer isn't exploring.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: A small girl is confronted by a pack of monsters, only to reveal a massive hybrid weapon, where even the blade is taller than she is. Against these monsters, she becomes a whirlwind of death and mayhem, with spent bullet cartridges, severed limbs and decapitated heads flying all over the battlefield. Upon finishing the fight, she lands in a demure stance that is framed by the enormous scythe.
  • Grave-Marking Scene: The trailer opens with a snowy moonlit scene at the top of a cliff. Ruby is standing in front of a gravestone while the wind whips her cloak and rose petals all around her. As she turns to walk away from it, a rose can be seen carved into the gravestone, along with the epitaph "Summer Rose - Thus Kindly I Scatter".
  • Little Red Fighting Hood: The trailer opens with a girl in a red hood leaving a grave she's just visited. As she walks through the forest, wolf-like monsters appear from the shadows to try and kill her... cue her whipping out an enormous weapon and single-handedly slaying every single one of them.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: When Ruby first pulls out her weapon, it functions as a gun. Then she unfolds its full form, which is a scythe. Then she reveals she can use it as a gun and a scythe at the same time.
  • No-Dialogue Episode: The trailer consists of a single girl fighting monsters in a forest. The only sounds are the snarls of the Beowolves, the sound effects and the music score.
  • Ominous Latin Chanting: Towards the end of the Red Trailer, the sheer numbers of the Beowolves surrounding Ruby appears to be starting to catch up with her. As she battles to obtain a position where she can assess her situation and change the ammo cartridges in her weapon, the music turns to a soft, feminine Latin chant that builds up the suspense as Ruby and the Beowolves face each other. It ends in favour of climactic music as the final stage of the battle starts.
  • Recoil Boost: When she changes her ammo cartridge, she turns the weapon to face behind her and fires. Using the recoil along with the Gravity dust she just loaded, she propels herself into the pack of monsters so fast that the sound effects are supersonic.
  • Spent Shells Shower: At the end of the trailer, all the shells she fired while executing her attacks can be seen falling all around her.
