Recap / Power Rangers Ninja Storm S1E17 The Samurai's Journey Part 2

Go To

When Cam finds himself in the far past he has to find a way back to the present, along the way of his journey he discovers a few things about his father's history and a dark secret.

Tropes

  • The Ace: Kanoi is considered the academy's best student, which is why he was selected for the sword techniques demonstration.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: How Kiya's flippant attitude about Miko getting the better of his brother evaporates.
Kanoi: Oh, you like breakin' the rules, don't ya, Brother? I know what you get up to in your free time.
  • Badass Boast:
    Madtropolis: Hey, who are you?!
Cam: I'm the Ranger who's gonna bring you down!
  • Being Good Sucks: Kanoi makes it known early on that he's aware of Kiya's extracurricular activities. He couldn't actually do anything about it, until catching him in the act of using dark ninja powers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Back in the present, Madtropolis is about to finish the powerless Rangers when the new Green Samurai Ranger arrives.
    • While in the past just as Cam was about to pronounced guilty of stealing from Miko, Kanoi arrives in the nick of time and reveals Kiya to the real culprit.
  • Big "NO!": Cam when he learns who Kiya really is.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Kiya displays these when hypnotizing Miko to let go of her amulet. However, Cam shows up, and his eyes revert to normal.
  • Call-Forward: Kiya explicitly promises to settle up with Kanoi someday.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Since Miko was the first female student at the academy 20-30 years in the past, Kanoi and the other students' surprise that a girl could beat Kanoi in combat plays as this. By the time Ninja Storm took place, many of Kanoi's pupils at the Wind Ninja Academy students are women, Blue Ranger Tori chief among them.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Done by the samurai that defeats Kanoi in a match. Everyone else is surprised that Samus Is a Girl; Cam is surprised that it's his mother.
  • Evil Twin: Kiya/Lothor is this to Kanoi/Sensei.
  • Foreshadowing: Kanoi observes that his brother likes to break the rules and does something else in his free time.
  • Generation Xerox: Miko is a samurai and received her amulet from her father. She in turn gives it to her son.
  • Good is Not Nice: Whereas Kiya is seemingly pleasant but evil, Kanoi is hotheaded and righteous.
  • In the Blood:
    Kiya: You're a stubborn one!
    Cam: Runs in the family!
  • Irony: Due to the academy having a different password in the past, Cam is forced to fight a young ninja that turns out to be his father.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Lothor is Sensei's brother and Cam's uncle.
Cam: I can't believe Dad never told me.
  • Missing Mom:
Cam: There's so much I wanna ask you. So much I wanna tell you.
    Miko: Goodbye, Cam. Good luck.
  • Parents Know Their Children: Before Cam departs for the present, Miko seems to have already deduced their relation.
  • Precrime Arrest: Upon finding out his soon-to-be-exiled Evil Uncle is Lothor's past self, he tries to persuade the other ninjas to kill him instead. Unfortunately, they refuse to deliver punishment for future actions.
  • Properly Paranoid: Kanoi says he's well-aware of what Kiya does when he thinks no one is looking.
  • Rhetorical Request Blunder: With Earth being frozen wrecking his chance to destroy the Rangers, Lothor hopes this is just some kind of dream and flippantly suggests someone pinch him. Zurgane obliges, much to Lothor's irritation.
  • The Reveal: Lothor is human and the twin brother of Sensei.
  • Samus Is a Girl: The samurai that Kanoi fights.
    Kanoi: He's a she! I mean, she's a girl!
Ancient Sensei: That seems fairly obvious.
  • So Proud of You: Cam speaks cryptically about how his mother might not approve of the things he's doing now. Miko disagrees, feeling she'd be proud to see him this way.
Cam: [after Miko walks away] Thanks, Mom.
  • Spanner in the Works: Kiya had effectively framed Cam and would've gotten away with it, but Kanoi caught him with the Samurai Amulet in the woods.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Kiya starts ranting about the new name he will take, Cam starts putting it all together and gets very worried.
  • Un-person: Before banishing him from Earth, the Ancient Sensei says that Kiya will be stripped of his ninja rank and effectively no longer exist, giving way to Kiya's Wham Line.
  • We Will Meet Again: "I will not forget the part you played in this, Brother! I will have my revenge."
  • Wham Line: "I have no use for your archaic ways or worthless name. From now on, I will take the name of the ancient warrior of evil. From this point forth, I will be known... as Lothor!"
  • Wham Shot: When Kiya gets slammed into the force bubble, his face briefly resembles a certain villain's mask. This foreshadows who he will become in the future.

Green Samurai Ranger

Cam was the son of Sensei Watanabe, and the creator of the Wind Ranger's powers and zords. While he strongly desired to join the Rangers in the battlefield, his father forbade him due to a promise by his late mother. However, after certain events led him to inherit his mother's Samurai Amulet, he was finally able to join the Rangers as the Green Samurai Ranger.
