Recap / Power Rangers Ninja Steel S 01 E 02 Forged In Steel

Go To

The episode begins by introducing Calvin and Hayley, boyfriend and girlfriend, out driving when they're interrupted by falling debris from Galvanax's ship. They meet Mick and help him escape from some foot soldiers. They bring him to the school's workshop so he can repair his communicator and he gets mistaken for the school's new shop teacher.

Meanwhile, Brody and the others head to his childhood home to recover the Ninja Steel. Brody is upset to find his brother Aiden is nowhere to be found, though Sarah offers words of comfort. They dig up a hidden box in which Brody expects to find the Ninja Steel, unfortunately the only thing in there is a photograph of him, his brother and their father, who's holding up a martial arts trophy. Brody realizes Aiden must have hidden the steel and left the photo as a secret message. Sarah recognizes the trophy, having seen in earlier in the school's display case. Realizing the steel must be hidden inside, Brody is contacted Mick and tells him to recover it. Unfortunately, Galvanax was able to spy on the discussion and sends a monster of his own to intercept.

At the school, Mick and the others recover the trophy and try to get to Brody when they get attacked by a monster and Calvin and Hayley fight to protect Mick. The Ninja Nexus Star suddenly flies into the middle of the battle, with the Yellow and White Power Stars now suddenly glowing. The two retrieve them just as Brody and the others catch up. All five together use the stars to morph and they start the fight with the monster, even discovering their morphers have extra battle modes.

The monster is swiftly destroyed, but brought back and grown to giant size. However Mick sees a vision inside the Nexus Star of a fleet of Zords. Taking the Ninja Steel from the trophy, he throws it into the Star and it's returned in the form of Zord Throwing Stars, one for each ranger. Using them, they are able to summon their Zords and use them to defeat the monster again.

After the battle the rangers take the Nexus Star to the school's shop class, deciding to transform the broken paint shop into a makeshift command center where they can hide it and Mick will continue to pretend to be the rangers' teacher in order to prevent anyone from finding the Star. However, Sarah notices that the final Ninja Power Star is missing. Brody figures someone must have found it before the Nexus Star returned to them and they're left to wonder who has it.

On Galvanax's ship, while Cosmo Royale is thrilled at the ratings boost the battle with the Rangers has caused Galvanax himself couldn't care less and it is revealed that Madame Odious is one the who recovered the Gold Power Star but is keeping it secret from Galvanax and Ripcon.

  • Audible Gleam: There's one when Victor mentions his perfect teeth as he's introducing himself to Mick.
  • Bittersweet Ending: It's mostly quite sweet, as the team comes together, they get a base, and Brody and Mick can experience normal lives for the first time in years. However, Brody and Sarah briefly ponder the location of the missing Power Star, and viewers see it in the last place the Rangers would want it to be.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The trophy with Dane Romero's name on it Sarah spotted in the previous episode turns out to have the Ninja Steel hidden inside of it.
  • Didn't See That Coming: When the group comes together, Calvin and Hayley are surprised Preston got mixed up in this, and he says the same of them.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: As Mick describes to Hayley and Calvin the kind of monsters he was escaping, Hayley's dog Kody starts barking at something off-screen. The group then sees Kudabots approaching.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In numerous shots throughout the episode, the Nexus Star can be seen with the Gold Power Star missing. This could easily have been dismissed as a case of Special Effect Failure, but it actually turns out to be a plot point at the end of the episode.
  • Go Through Me: Calvin tells the Kudabots that if they want Mick, they have to go through him and Hayley.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight:
    • Aiden put the Ninja Steel in Dane's trophy (which had his name on it) and got it into the high school's trophy case.
    • Calvin and Hayley suggest setting their base up in the shop's paint room. Since Victor caused a paint explosion and Mick is the new shop teacher, they can simply say the booth is out of order indefinitely and no one will question it.
  • Hope Spot: Brody held out hope Aiden would be still be at the old homestead and is devastated to find that's not the case.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: The ending (see Wham Line) will pay off much later in future episodes regarding who the Gold Ninja Steel Ranger is.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Hayley reminding Calvin that she's his girlfriend, not the truck.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After the Rangers win, Cosmo tells the monster audience that he'll see them next week.
  • Mistaken Identity: Principal Hastings believes that Mick is the new shop teacher since he looks like he would be right at home with the class.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: In-Universe, this is Calvin and Hayley's reaction to Mick talking about Galaxy Warrior.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Cosmo is excited by the Ranger battles because the audience loves it and the ratings are through the roof.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Calvin and Hayley are properly introduced here, gaining their powers and joining the team.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Brody can't believe Aiden has abandoned the homestead. As Redbot says, it's been a decade since Brody was taken into space, so Aiden could be literally anywhere on Earth.
  • Wham Line: "Brody, didn't you say that there were six Ninja Power Stars? 'Cause we only pulled out five."
  • Wham Shot: The episode ends with Madame Odorous having the Gold Power Star in her hand.
  • You Fool!: Galvanax over Cosmo being focused on the show's ratings instead of the Power Stars.
