With only three weeks left before the Pokémon League competition, Ash, Brock and Misty head up to Mt. Hideaway to find one of the Elite Four Trainers. Ash and Brock hope he will teach them the real secrets of Pokémon training, but what they really learn is that Mt. Hideaway is the land of overgrown Onix!

- Androcles' Lion: Bruno gets the Onix to join him after relieving it's Sandslash-induced pain.
- Broken Pedestal: Brock's image of Bruno gets literally shattered when Bruno admits that he has no secret on Pokémon and that he just catches strong Pokémon. It gets rebuilt in the end after Bruno solves the Onix problem and reveals that the actual secret is to work with Pokémon as equals.
- Butt-Monkey: Misty is the victim of Ash's training failures.

- Save the Villain: The twerps help Team Rocket when they're trapped in a cave while the rampaging Onix is bearing over them.
- Tongue Trauma: Played for Laughs; James complains that he bit his tongue because Meowth fast-forwarded through Team Rocket's motto.
- Wax On, Wax Off: Bruno claims he's training Ash, but he's just making him do chores. Brock makes sure of this by whacking Bruno on the head with a blunt object, expecting Bruno to catch it within an inch of himself. Instead, he just gets hit on the head.
