Oshawott! Dude, She's Like in a Coma
Ash, Iris, and Cilan come across Cynthia, the Champion of the Sinnoh region, while beginning their journey to the Unova League. Further down the road, a capture attempt by Team Rocket leaves Meloetta injured. The twerps and Cynthia nurse Meloetta back to health, and Oshawott discovers a kindling romantic desire for the Legendary.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Call-Back: Just like her first physical appearance, Cynthia's introduced having trouble deciding what kind of ice cream to order.
- The Cameo: Cynthia.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Cynthia to Iris. Cynthia was testing Iris' Axew in battle. Despite a large-gapped victory, Garchomp did bot deliver the final blow. At least Axew learned Giga Impact.
- Dub-Induced Plot Hole: Iris mentioned Cynthia is a Dragon-Trainer, despite Garchomp being the only Dragon-type pokemon in her arsenal.
- Foreshadowing: Team Rocket's targeting of Meloetta foreshadows events for the next 15 or so episodes.
- Love at First Sight: The first time he sees Meloetta, Oshawott is instantly smitten.
- Music Soothes the Savage Beast: First example of Meloetta using this trope. Her first song stops Oshawott and Emolga from fighting.
- Not-So-Harmless Villain: Their capture attempt of Meloetta is one of the most damaging attacks Jessie and James have pulled off.
- Running Gag: Cynthia's addiction to ice cream.
- Slap Fight: After the Tap on the Head incident, Oshawott and Emolga start arguing.
- Tap on the Head: Emolga loses control before landing by Meloetta with the Oran Berry, and bumps heads with Oshawott. They both pass out, and Meloetta disappears with the Oran Berry.
- Unlimited Wardrobe: For her appearance in this series, Cynthia changes her wardrobe to a blue shirt and black pants ensemble with heeled sandals. She's even introduced from the waist down to further emphasize this.
