Tropes

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After The Mask lets the robbers escape with the loot and ruining his date with the security guard who he made leave Edge City because he came on too strong towards her, Stanley decides to get rid of the Mask of Loki for good by putting in dry cement. But then after finding out about Pretorius's plan, Stanley decides to get the Mask of Loki back, knowing the Mask is necessary to stop a supervillain.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: The Mask sees Matilda the security guard and goes so strong on her she runs in panic. And given he decides to chase her while leaving the criminals he beat up behind to complete their robbery, this makes Stanley feel terrible.
  • Ass Kicks You: The Mask shows just how brilliant he is with his insanity as he sees a car coming towards him so he turns around and blows up his bottoms up to become airbags that sends the car back to the wall.
Mask: Standard-modal mask now comes with dual airbags.
  • Big Fancy House: The House of Tommorrow is this, but Pretorius turns it into a trap to get Stanley and The Mask.
  • Big Brother Instinct: The Mask shows himself to be a protective, fun loving and caring older brother to Stanley so when Mrs Peenman shouts at Stanley all because of him thinking too loud, he decided to get payback on her by putting cigars in her mouth then light them up and smiles upon seeing them blowing up in her face then laughs clearly happy that he did that.
  • Badass Adorable: =Stanley is cute as he is sweet, kind and polite to most people though he is willing to put on the mask to get even with Mrs Peenman though he stops himself but when he hears the alarm from the bank going off, he puts it on showing just how very brave he is to put it on even if it turns him into a crazy, wild madman.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The Mask is a childish, cartoonish and genuinely insane man but he is very intelligent despite his quirks and he is also a Reality Warper as well so considering he is a lot more sane than he looks shows just how much he keeps himself in control so that he doesn't destroy the world with everyone on it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
    • Stanley Ipkiss is a kind, good-hearted, polite and nice man but when get shouted at by Mrs Peenman for thinking out too loud, he was going to put on the mask of Loki even though it will turn him into his alter-ego The Mask but he stops himself at the last second only to put it on when the alarm at the bank goes off which his date works at does he put it on.
    • The Mask is a nice, kind, good-hearted, polite and charismatic man but he will go after those who are being mean to his little brother figure Stanley as he puts cigars in Mrs Peenman's mouth then light them up because of her shouting at him and is willing to fight any villains who attacks or hurts anyone who live in Edge City.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The Mask after ejecting the criminal sees the bank which he takes his hat off at the joy of the sight of it hinting that he disguises himself as Stanley sometimes if he does not feel taking his face off and tells the audience that he just can't get enough of this place with him chattering his teeth also hinting that he has fun doing bank accounts there.
Mask: My day job! I just can't get enough of this place. (He makes a babbling sound with his teeth while looking like a cute kid who enjoys what he does there.)
  • Cloudcuckoolander: The Mask is impulsive, genuinely insane, wacky and acts like a little kid but he is harmless and has a good heart and cares about his friends as he rescues them from Pretorius.
  • Continuity Nod: Showing some events of the movie still happened, when Stanley shows some contempt for Peggy she replies "Okay, okay, so I sold you up the river to some mobsters ONCE! Can't we put that behind us?"
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being too strong The Mask does not try to force himself into the security guard when he sees her showing that he is a gentleman who will respect anyone's private boundaries. He also shows that he has morals as he only Troll people who annoy him and also cares about innocent lives as well as he saw that the House of Tomorrow is about to crash into a hospital where the children are and he turns it around to save them from being killed.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Stanley Ipkiss is seen in his apartment bemoaning that everything in his life does not seem to be going right but hopes that he can get a date with a security guard who works at his bank but then gets shouted at by Mrs Peenman for thinking too loud who slams the door on him with Stanley saying how he would get his hands on her if only he wish showing he is nice and sweet but he is a doormat.
    • The Mask in his first scene blows an Explosive Cigar in Mrs Peenman’s face, then goes to the bank, where he stops the crime but still leaves trying to romance a security guard he frightened, showing he is wacky, crazy and good hearted but gets distracted easily by trival things and will waste time on doing them instead of the most important thing like stopping a bank from being robbed.
  • Explosive Cigar: The Mask to Mrs. Peenman. "Smokin'... will kill you!" *kaboom*
  • Friend to All Children: The Mask clearly cares about children very much, as once a police officer shouts out that The House of Tomorrow is about to smash into a hospital where the children are, he makes sure to change its direction.
  • Imagine Spot: When Charlie is acting like a jerk towards to Stanley, Stanley puts on the mask of loki which his alter ego The Mask puts Charlie in jack in a box and send him flying but however it turns out to be happening in Stanley's head, but his smile shows that though The Mask can stress him out at times it is clear that he cares about him very much and he doesn't mind him doing something to Charlie at the moment.
  • Loon with a Heart of Gold: The Mask is a lunatic and a madman but is a good-hearted man who is a sweetheart with his dog Milo, his friend Peggy and even with some of the people like Kellaway though he pulls wedgies on him from time to time.
  • Nice Guy: Stanley Ipkiss is sweet, polite and kind but he is shy and a doormat as well.
  • Sexier Alter Ego: The Mask unlike Stanley is confident and has charisma which does bring girls over to him eventually despite his too strong nature. He is also bald but he is still attractive even without hair since he acts like a gentleman to everyone else and wears nice clothes as well which also makes him very easy looking.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: The Mask after ejecting the criminal driver out of the car sees him falling down and decide to catch him instead of letting him die which shows The Mask does not like killing people or letting them die therefore he will save them no matter if they are criminals or not.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The Mask still changes costumes whenever he wants. He turns into a child, a knight, a cowboy and a minstrel at the bank where Stanley works; an artist, in a bathsuit, a gladiator, Cesar, and a construction worker when fighting Walter; a movie director after the fighter; a carny and a little boy when rescuing Peggy and Milo from Pretorius and his henchmen; and during the raid in the House of Tomorrow, a samurai, a maid, the Terminator, a biker, a teenage boy and an exterminator.
  • Wild Take: Of course. Most notable is the one that was kept in the opening sequence, where The Mask has an Eye Pop and has his teeth jump out of his mouth as he sees the car driven by the robber approaching him. Another Eye Pop happens when he sees the House of Tomorrow is approaching a hospital.
