Recap / Phineas And Ferb My Fair Goalie

Go To

When Ferb's cousins visit from England and challenge him to a soccer match, he and Phineas warp the walls of physics and build a high tech 3D stadium. Meanwhile, convinced that her relationship with Jeremy depends on her being more proper, Candace enlists the help of Ferb's British cousin, Eliza, to teach her the rules of etiquette. Back at Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc., Dr. Doofenshmirtz is sick in bed but forces himself to set off his "If-A-Tree-Fell-in-the-Forest-Inator", which causes any tree that falls (or anything that falls, really) to say his name.

Tropes:

  • As You Know: Parodied; the episode opens with Phineas telling Ferb "Your cousins from England are here visiting." Then he points out that he means that they've just arrived.
  • Bait-and-Switch Silhouette: Everyone on the team is hoping Ferb will show up. When the door opens, a shadow appears shaped like Ferb, but it turns out to be Irving with a bucket on his head. And he also brought Ferb.
  • Be Yourself: Double subverted. Candace becomes a Proper Lady to impress Jeremy, causing him to remark that he's "so glad [she] changed everything about [herself]," which upsets Candace... but he was just being sarcastic, and he liked Candace better the way she was before.
  • Book on the Head: Eliza suggests this to help Candace improve her posture. Candace just gets confused and wonders if this means polite people don't use book shelves.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Of a sort. When Phineas mentions Perry, a Dramatic Sting plays showing a Perry-shaped groove in the grass, and one of Ferb's cousins asks, "Who's Perry?"
  • Call-Back: Phineas asks if anyone has a piccolo, singling out Buford.
Buford: Argh! One day somebody's gonna ask me for some obscure musical instrument, and it ain't gonna be there. What's gonna happen then?
  • Cliffhanger: The first part ends with Ferb having mysteriously disappeared? What are we gonna do?
Phineas: We'll be right back. (BAM!)
  • Continuity Nod: Before Phineas and Ferb give the Nostrils their Football X-7 stadium, they recall when they gave an entire monster truck arena to Buck Buckerson.
  • Curse: Ferb's "emu curse" to never be on a winning soccer team again.
  • Curse Escape Clause: To break the emu curse, a boy in a Sunday bonnet has to sing the note E-flat above high C before the cursed one.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: A few months before summer began, Phineas and Ferb's soccer team was in the middle of a big game when the ball got knocked off the field. Ferb hurried to grab the ball, but when doing so, a group of emus carried off the assistant coach; as a result, Ferb left the game, having become cursed to never be on a winning team again.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A man being forced out of academic circles as a result of being outed as something that the public was deeply prejudiced against during the 50s sounds a lot like the Red or Lavender Scare, though it's made more kids friendly and absurd by having the prejudice be against Palindromes, of all things.
  • Down to the Last Play: The soccer match against Ferb's cousins comes down to a 4-4 draw with seconds on the clock. Ferb takes the last shot after his emu curse has been broken but ends up missing
  • Fun with Palindromes: Professor Ross Eforp's name is really "professor" spelled backwards. Apparently palindromes were frowned upon in England during the 50s, contributing to the failure of Football X7 and Ross Eforp going into hiding.
  • Groin Attack: Happens to Baljeet while wearing Candace's bonnet and Buford accidentally hits him in the crotch with the soccer ball, causing him to whine the E-flat above high C which breaks Ferb's emu curse.
  • I Let You Win: Lawrence lets his brother beat him in a number of silly competitions to make him feel better about himself. When Linda gets annoyed by this and tells Lawrence to stop messing around, he easily crushes his brother in a game of "keepy-uppie".
  • Leitmotif: (guitar riff) NOS-TRILS ON THE BUS!
  • Proper Lady: Candace demands her English cousin Eliza train her in the basics of being a proper lady, to which the Englishwoman reluctantly approves. She reverts back to being her usual self at the end.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": When the video of Doof rehearsing his evil monologue ends with him saying he forgot to pick up vitamins, the very sick Doof just looks at Perry and says, "Not one word, Perry the Platypus."
  • Punny Name: The football club is from Snifferton. Their nickname? The Nostrils.
  • Pygmalion Plot: Candace's British cousin Eliza (whose name is a Shout-Out to the trope namer) trains her to be a "proper lady" to impress Jeremy. However, Jeremy ends up liking Candace's old self better.
  • Separated by a Common Language: Association Football vs. American Football is brought up courtesy of Buford, who thinks they're playing the latter and decks himself out in football gear (and tackles one of the Fletcher Cousins during the game, earning himself a yellow card).
  • Sick Episode: For Perry's subplot, Doofenshmirtz caught a cold and decided not to do evil that day. Major Monogram (who caught a similar cold from Carl) got jealous that Doof called in sick while he had to go to work and orders Perry to go stop Doof.
Major Monogram: Don't you think I'd rather be at home watching Ducky Momo?
  • Special Guest: Real life footballers Gary Lineker and Darren Bent voice members of the Snifferton Nostrils.
  • Staggered Zoom: A Running Gag throughout the first half of the episode.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When the curse is broken, Ferb takes the last shot of the match to break the 4-4 draw and win. He winds ups kicking the ball over the crossbar and Phineas worries the curse is still in effect.
Ferb: No, it's broken. Sometimes you just miss.
  • Tempting Fate: In Doofenshmirtz's pre-recorded monologue, he remarks that he's out of vitamins, but shrugs it off saying, "So I skipped my Vitamin C for a day. What's the worst thing that could happen?" Cut to present Doof, sick as a dog, telling Perry not to call him out.
  • The Voiceless: In addition to Ferb, the only cousins who speak are Eliza and the blond and tall brunette Beckhams.
