Recap / Phineas And Ferb Lotsa Latkes

Go To

When the entire Tri-State Area is missing potatoes on the day of the Latkes Festival, Phineas and Ferb attempt to build a potato cloning device using a potato chip provided by Buford, but when the potato's DNA combines with DNA from Buford's saliva, they accidentally create a slew of Buford-potato hybrids. At the same time, Linda decides to take Candace out for a bike ride across town after seeing her lie down and do nothing. Meanwhile, Dr. Doofenshmirtz attempts to use a machine to summon the Spartan Army so that he can use them to take over the Tri-State Area, but he accidentally summons the Mongol Army instead.

Tropes:

  • Copycat Mockery: Candace mocks her mother saying "I'm not as young as I used to be" when using sausage links to make her bike faster.
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Candace and Linda arrive at the senior center, Linda's face is covered in a newspaper, which she insists on reading all the way through instead of just taking it off and seeing the potato gremlins and the mongol army.
  • The Generation Gap: One of the seniors points out he was born in The Greatest Generation.
  • Hand Puppet: Baljeet and Buford first attempt to keep the seniors entertained by using sock puppets. It doesn't work.
  • Holding the Floor: Buford and Baljeet are forced to entertain the seniors while the rest of the kids attempt to round up the Buford-potato hybrids.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: The Buford-potato hybrids.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Two in the climax:
    Doofenshmirtz: My brothers! And… others.
(A few seconds later, when Candace arrives…)
Candace: Mom! Mom! Potato gremlins! And… others!
  • Noodle Incident: Doof uses potatoes to power his inator, because he used his last alimony check for his "Made-of-gold-inator".
  • Painful Rhyme: In the song "Frenemies", Buford and Baljeet rhyme "hats" and spats" with "ats" (the plural form of the word "at"). Baljeet calls Buford out for this.
    Baljeet: You are pluralizing "at"?
Buford: Work with me, Brain Boy!
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: The senior citizens at the Latkes Festival are very impatient and do not take kindly to Buford and Baljeet's attempts to stall for time.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Lampshaded. Ferb has a list of "S" words that are seldom used by kids, and half of them are crossed out. They manage to cross off the word "simultaneously" early on in the episode, and they later cross off "septuagenarian" as the episode ends.
  • Shout-Out: Doofenshmirtz's "Spartan" costume is directly from the film 300. It's impracticality for actual combat is lampshaded by Doofenshmirtz who says it must have been much warmer in ancient Greece.
  • Shown Their Work: Ferb correctly explains the difference between stocks and a pillory, stating that a pillory forces the wearer to stand upright, as opposed to the stocks (which secure the wearer's ankles).
  • The Stinger: Two archeologists uncover an ancient temple chronicling the war between the Mongols and an army of potato people, as a pharmacist from the future tried desperately to return to his own time all while declaring "Curse you, Perry the Platypus???"
Archaeologist: I swear! I majored for this in college!
  • Stock Punishment: Doofenshmirtz uses a pair of stocks as Perry's trap.
  • Tough Room: The seniors when Buford and Baljeet attempt to entertain them (one lady yelled "You stink!" to both of them during their sock puppet routine); they do eventually win the seniors over.
