Recap / Petals To The Metal Chapter Ten

Go To

"Can our heroes reach out and take a bite of that sweet checkered flag? It's the final lap of... The Adventure Zone!"
The Announcer

See here for the main recap page.

This is it. Our heroes are in a dead heat with The Raven, the finish line in sight. Who will emerge victorious? Who will end up with the mighty Gaia Sash? More importantly, is there any prize money for this thing? Taako does some sunbathing. Magnus gets shredded. Merle executes the weirdest brag ever.

Tropes

  • Cherry Blossoms: The tree transformed from Sloan and Hurley sends hundreds of cherry blossom petals flying in the air.
  • Cue the Sun: We know we're past the climax when there is fair weather instead of dust storms and mystical tornadoes.
  • Emergency Transformation: Sloan uses her last act with the Gaia Sash to transform herself and Hurley into a cherry tree.
  • Exposition Cut: When Captain Captain Bane asks the heroes what happened, and Taako laments that "there was like seven episodes of stuff", Travis says that their recap "crossfades into the sound of an airplane propeller".
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Hurley flings herself into envenomed thorns to end the conflict with Sloane.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Discussed when Travis asks Griffin if the final confrontation with Sloane is "one of those boss fights where you're supposed to lose, and then you all wake up, and it's like, 'Well, we'll get 'em next time.'" He's not completely wrong.

  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Averted for a change, when Taako fails to resist the temptation of the Gaia Sash. Earlier, he had managed through dumb luck to collect The Phoenix Gauntlet and The Oculus without any problems, which earned him the role of designated picker-upper of Grand Relics. (In fact, Taako was never incorruptibly pure, though being oblivious might have helped.) Fortunately, his comrades quickly jump in to prevent the entire arc from starting over, by punching him in the face.
  • One-Winged Angel: When the heroes catch up to Sloane after the end of the race, the corruption of the Gaia Sash finally overwhelms her completely, and she becomes the core of a gargantuan vine monster. For bonus points, even the vine monster has a second form that's more deadly.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Captain Captain Bane gets one of these after trying to get the heroes to join him in a poisoned toast.

  • Tornado Move: Sloan creates a giant tornado off the edge of the cliff. Hurley and the trio drive into it.
