Recap / Peg + Cat S1E66 "The Roxanne Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat are at the beach, making a card house, when a ball knocks it over. Cat goes to return the ball and plans on telling the ball's owner off, but changes his mind when he sees that the owner is another cat, who he seems to have a crush on. The pink cat thanks Cat and talks about how she enjoys making sculptures out of things she finds on the beach and how it's good for the environment. She then notes that one particular sculpture always falls down if it has more than twenty things on it and asks him to help by counting to twenty by twos every time she puts two items on the statue.

Cat nods, but then runs to Peg and asks for help because he doesn't know how to count by twos. She teaches him how, but he is worried that he'll get tongue-tied like he did before, so she agrees to count by twos for him if he does.

They start to sing Problem Solved, but before they can finish, the pink cat bumps into them and tells them that she finished the sculpture on her own. She says that she knows the brick she put on it is a solid shape, but doesn't know the name of it. Peg says that it is a rectangular prism and the pink cat, whose name is Roxanne, is impressed because she really likes solid shapes and thinks it is Cat who identified the shape of the brick. She invites him to go for a walk in the woods and identify all the solid shapes.

Roxanne leaves, and Cat runs back and tells Peg that he wants to go for a walk with Roxanne but doesn't want her to know how ignorant he is. Peg thinks that Roxanne will like Cat if he acts normally, but before Cat can reply, Roxanne arrives, startling Cat who jumps into the picnic basket, telling Peg not to speak lest Roxanne recognize her voice and realize it was Peg who identified the shape, not him. Roxanne asks if Peg, who she doesn't know, has seen a bluish-purple cat around. Cat says, "His name is Cat!". Roxanne thinks it was Peg who spoke and asks if she knows him. Peg holds cards over her face so Roxanne can't tell her lips aren't moving and Cat continues, claiming that he's actually famous for his vast knowledge. She leaves and Cat follows after, telling Peg to be his voice.

On their walk, Peg lip-synchs, making Cat agree to everything Roxanne says, but when she goes off to fetch her ball, Cat tells Peg that "yes" is not enough for her to say, however, Peg points out that if she said more things, he wouldn't know when to move his lips. They then decide to lip-synch a song about solid shapes, which they do and Roxanne joins in.

Then, they bump into a large sculpture like Roxanne's but shaped like a pyramid. Pig pops up and Roxanne asks if he made it. Pig nods and they talk about the triangles that make up the pyramid. Roxanne asks if they can climb the sculpture but Pig just sings his triangle song, which she takes as a 'yes' and runs off to get her climbing ropes.

Peg comments that Pig could not have made the sculpture and Ramone shows up, saying that he was the real pyramid-maker and that he was making a music video with the pig. Cat says the situation is unfair because it takes him more effort to make someone think he's smarter than he really is than the Pig. Peg tries to convince him to just be his normal self, but he says he wants to be like her instead.

Roxanne comes back and they climb the pyramid but due to Peg climbing on one side and the animals being on the other, they begin to slip. Cat then says, "Help!" in his own voice, and Peg shows herself and they reveal that they'd been lip-synching. Cat then slides down the pyramid and the others realize it's safe to do so and slide after him. Peg starts to sing the Problem Solved song, but instead of singing, "So everything is awesome", Cat sings, "Actually, the problem was getting Roxanne to think I'm smart but now she won't because she really knows me, so problem not solved". Roxanne asks Cat why he says he isn't smart and he replies that it's because he doesn't know a lot of things. Roxanne says that that doesn't make him unintelligent and both cats sing a song about how "you can learn", after which Roxanne admits she likes Cat.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Roxanne wears boots and Pig temporarily wore sunglasses.
  • An Aesop: Two: be true to yourself, and don't worry if there's something you don't know because you can learn.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Cat is, as Roxanne puts it, "bluish-purple", and Roxanne is pink.
  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Inverted for Roxanne, who wears nothing but shoes.
  • Beach Episode: A lot of this episode takes place at the beach, but nobody goes swimming.
  • Be Yourself: Peg tells Cat to be himself twice.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase:
    • It's Cat, not Peg, who says, "I've got a really big problem".
    • After Cat does his "snap out of it" gesture, it's Roxanne, not Peg, who says, "Cat's right".
    • Roxanne imitates Pig's triangle song at one point.
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: Pig says, "I do love—-" but Peg and Cat say, "We know you love triangles, Pig."
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Pig sings about triangles and plagiarizes the pyramid for no reason.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Zigzagged. A cat named Cat, a pig named Pig, but another cat named Roxanne, and two humans named Peg and Ramone.
  • Embarrassment Plot: Cat is too embarrassed to admit that he's not as knowledgeable as Roxanne thinks.
  • Funny Animal: Pig and the cats all act sort of like humans, but not fully.
  • Implied Love Interest: Cat sure acts like he has a crush on Roxanne, but romance is never brought up.
  • The Klutz: Cat falls on his butt and asks how to avoid it during the "you can learn" song.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Coincidentally, Roxanne is pink and Cat is blue-purple. Although Peg wears blue too.
