Recap / Peg + Cat S1E13 "The Tree Problem"

Go To

Peg has received an enormous present, but she wants Cat nearby when she opens it. He calls her, but even he doesn't know where he is. Peg complains about not being able to find Cat, when a caterpillar asks how it makes her feel. An acorn falls on Peg and she says, "Ouch!". The caterpillar says, "Sorry it hurts", but Peg explains that an acorn fell on her. This inspires her to look up, and she sees Cat in the tree, juggling acorns. She thinks he intentionally dropped the acorn, and, while Cat isn't sure if that's true or not, he can't deny it either. The first problem is solved, but there's a bigger one: Cat doesn't know how he got there, and he doesn't know how to get down either!

So Peg leaves Cat and the caterpillar, who's still curious about Peg's feelings, and finds the Neighbor Ladies. They assume she wants clothes, but really she wants a ladder. Viv lets her borrow one, but she has to stack items that are in the way first. Peg stacks them, while singing about how to do so without them falling over, and then gets the ladder.

However, the ladder is rickety, and when she tries to climb it, it breaks. After a brief rant, Peg asks Cat what he'd do if he was on the ground, and Cat says that he would walk around until he bumped into something. Peg tries, and bumps into the box, which gives her the idea to open it. She takes out a kaleidoscope and a coloring book, both very huge, and decides to stack them so Cat could climb down. The kaleidoscope is too slippery to climb, but it's good for sliding, only it is not high enough to reach Cat. Cat suggests she look in the box again, but Peg decides to move the box instead and stack the kaleidoscope on top. Ramone, having a day off, arrives and helps Peg out, but Cat doesn't know how to get down from the box. Ramone suggests Cat jump into his arms, but Cat doesn't want to, so Peg has him slide down the coloring book instead. The title characters then sing a song about Peg's loyalty to Cat.

This episode provides examples of...

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Cat is dark bluish-purple, as pointed out by Peg at the beginning.
  • Catchphrase: Played with. Peg says, "Totally freaking out" and "Really big problem", and Ramone says, "I do what I can", but Peg doesn't mention counting backwards from five like she normally does.
  • Cat Up a Tree: The main problem is Cat being stuck up a tree.
  • Character Tics: As usual, Peg flails her arms when she freaks out.
  • Chekovs Gift: The presents Peg receives, as well as the box they came in, eventually come in useful getting Cat down.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Cat, who of course is a cat, is the main focus.
  • Friendship Song: At the end, Peg sings to Cat (and he joins in) about how he can count on her.
  • Kissing the Ground: Cat kisses the ground after finally getting down.
  • The Klutz: Cat's clumsiness is mentioned when he says that he'd probably walk around until he bumped into something if he was on the ground.
  • Large Ham: On multiple occasions in this episode, Peg does a long, dramatic rant about not being able to get Cat down.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Peg alludes to the title when she says that if she could never bring Cat down, it would be "Peg + Nobody".
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: The caterpillar has a moustache.
  • Pirate: They don't feature, but Peg and Cat imagine the pirates during the "You Can Count on Me" song.
  • Noodle Incident: Something let Cat get stuck up a tree, without him even knowing that he was in a tree.
  • Ribcage Stomach: When Peg and Cat imagine Cat getting swallowed by a whale, they imagine the interior of its stomach as having visible ribs.
  • Swallowed Whole: Cat getting swallowed whole by a whale is one of the hypothetical scenarios during the song at the end.
  • Undying Loyalty: At the end, there's a whole song about how Peg would not give up on Cat.
