Recap / Peeking Through The Fourth Wall Episode 7

Go To

This time, Lincoln has brought along Luan, Lynn, Lola, and Lisa and they will be reading The Diary of a Loud. It's by Animation Fan 15, who's a pretty prolific fanfiction author.

The fanfic starts with the Louds spring cleaning. Fanfic Lori and Leni are sorting their clothes (with Leni "choosing indecisively" somehow), Luna and Luan are deciding whether to donate some of their instruments and props respectively, then Luan pranks Leni with her plastic spider, causing Leni to spray insect repellent even though spiders are arachnids... then again, it's Leni we're talking about.

Fanfic Lynn is organising her sports balls and Lucy is sorting through her books. The former says, "Who knew I had so many balls?!", which the latter says sounds creepy, and besides it would make sense to have that many, so Lynn says, "I don't get the joke"... even though Lucy didn't make a joke.

Meanwhile in the fanfic, Lana is tidying up the trash, and Lola is polishing her pageant awards. She says, "I'm always knew I was that good!" (sic), which is apparently also meant to be a joke. Lisa, in a hazmat suit, tidies up her supplies and changes Lily's diaper.

And fanfic Lincoln has found a blank diary mysteriously on his shelf. He writes his name on it, then starts writing in it at bedtime, and then again in the middle of the night.

The next morning, the fanfic twins need to find something for show-and-tell. Lana decides to take El Diablo and Lola searches in Lincoln's room and decides to bring his diary to school. Lana shows off El Diablo, then she and the teacher go to the bathroom, while Lola reads the diary.

It documents Lincoln's love for The Dream Boat and the time he got covered in poop (during "Two Boys and a Baby"). The class bursts out laughing, and the information spreads around the school. Chandler, Papa Wheelie, and Girl Jordan tease Lincoln and Clyde, and Ronnie Anne is about to tell something to Lincoln, but the school bell rings.

When he gets home, his older sisters have apparently found out about him getting covered in poop too and he angrily shouts that Ronnie Anne "broke up" with him. Lola comes in, not having heard her brother shouting, and the diary falls out, exposing her. Still very angry, Lincoln punches Lola in the face, giving her a black eye, knocking her teeth out, and causing her to fall downstairs and be knocked out.

Fanfic Lola is taken to the hospital, where she thinks she deserved it. The real Lola strongly disagrees. Fanfic Lola goes back from the hospital, and Lincoln is still mad at her, making the real Lola cry. Fanfic Lincoln then tells his other sisters that Lola has to dazzle him to make him love her again. The real Lincoln, fortunately, is highly offended by his fanfic counterpart's behaviour and lets Lola know that she doesn't have to do anything to earn his love.

Fanfic Lola has Lana build a stage, then puts on a show for Lincoln, who finally forgives her. Then, the real Lincoln carries Lola off to get ice cream to cheer her up.

This episode provides examples of

  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • Fanfic Lola is an even bigger gossip than the real Lola and reads Lincoln's diary to her whole class.
    • Fanfic Lincoln punches Lola in the face, hard enough to land her in hospital, and doesn't seem to care that she's hurt. Sure, the real Lincoln might be angry if Lola shared his diary with her class, but he wouldn't be that cruel.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Miss Allegra is called Ms. Taber in the fanfic.
  • "Balls" Gag: Fanfic Lynn says, "Who knew I had so many balls?!", prompting the real Lynn, plus Lincoln, to snicker.
  • Big Brother Bully: Fanfic Lincoln punches his little sister in the face, landing her in hospital, doesn't care, and says she has to dazzle him to make him love her again, all because she spilt some embarrassing secrets.
  • Big "WHAT?!": The siblings all shout, "WHAT?!" when fanfic Lola claims she deserved being put in the hospital.
  • Boys Like Creepy Critters: All of the boys in the fanfic twins' class think El Diablo is cool. That's about 15 six-year-old boys, who all like snakes. And none of the girls like him except Lana herself.
  • Character Exaggeration:
    • Lola may be a gossip, but she wouldn't read someone else's diary to her whole class. Fanfic Lola on the other hand...
    • Canon Lana is good with engineering, plumbing, and construction. Fanfic Lana builds a stage in two hours.
  • Comfort Food: Lincoln takes Lola to get ice cream to cheer her up.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Loud kids reminisce (and cringe) over the events of "Cover Girls".
    • Lincoln getting covered in Lily's poop in "Two Boys and a Baby" is mentioned.
    • Lincoln remembers the "trophy case incident", which happened in "Making the Case".
  • Curse Cut Short: When the time Lily's diaper hit the ceiling fan is brought up, Luan says, "Well, you know what they say, sh—", but Lynn interrupts.
  • The Diaper Change: At the beginning, fanfic Lisa changes Lily's diaper, and the real Lisa remarks that she does often have to change Lily, but doesn't mind because she tests things on her as well.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: As Lola pointed out, she'd deserve something for spilling Lincoln's secrets, but not to be hospitalised.
  • Everybody Cries: Lola and her sisters do this at the hospital as they feel sorry for Lincoln having been dumped by Ronnie Anne.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Lola may read diaries all the time, but she wouldn't share info from them with her whole class.
    • As Lincoln says, he gets steamed at his sisters sometimes, but would never say he hates them.
    • Lynn, despite being the most abrasive Loud, is disgusted when fanfic Lincoln says that Lola needs to "dazzle" him to earn his love again.
Lynn: God, what a scummy thing to say!
Lincoln: Took the words right out of my mouth.
  • Eye Scream:
    • Fanfic Lola gets such a bad black eye, it needs a bandage.
    • Fanfic Lincoln kisses Lola's damaged eye.
  • Game of Nerds: Lynn says that baseball is the "thinking girl's sport".
  • Hazmat Suit: Fanfic Lisa wears a hazmat suit to tidy up her supplies and change Lily's diaper.
  • Hidden Depths: The real Lynn is surprisingly knowledgeable about snake biology, to the amazement of Lisa.
  • Out of Character:
    • Fanfic Lincoln wakes up in the middle of the night to write about The Dream Boat, which is something the real Lincoln probably wouldn't do.
    • While Lola does read people's diaries, she wouldn't read them to the whole class like story Lola does. Also, Lincoln's room probably isn't the first place she'd look for something for show-and-tell.
  • Plot Hole: It's never revealed how fanfic Lincoln's diary ended up in his room, or how Lori heard his secrets, how Ronnie Anne was able to "break up" with Lincoln, or how Lola didn't hear Lincoln yell that Ronnie Anne broke up with him.
  • Pun: Luan says that "oxymoron" without the "oxy" is Leni. She later says that she "wood" not expect Lana to be able to build a stage in two hours.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Fanfic Lincoln is laughed at for watching a romance show because he's a boy.
  • Shipping: Discussed In-Universe when Lincoln is annoyed that so many fanfiction writers seem to think Ronnie Anne is his girlfriend.
  • Shout-Out: Lincoln says he has twenty knickknacks, which is a line from The Little Mermaid (1989).
  • Snakes Are Sinister: While fanfic El Diablo himself is harmless, Lana is the only girl in her class who doesn't scream at the sight of him.
  • Staircase Tumble: Played for drama. Fanfic Lola is sent falling downstairs, knocking her out.
  • Tempting Fate: At first, Lola is excited to read the fanfic because of the juicy title. She... doesn't end up liking it.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Not only does fanfic Lincoln give Lola a shiner, he also punches out most of her teeth!
  • Twitchy Eye: Of the "annoyed" variety, Lisa's eye twitches at one point because of the bad grammar.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: In-Universe example; the fanfic places Lola in the wrong for reading Lincoln's diary and therefore "deserving" to get severely beaten by Lincoln. But the real Lola and Lincoln, along with Luan, Lynn, and Lisa, immediately sympathize with fanfic Lola, while viewing fanfic Lincoln as Unintentionally Unsympathetic. Lola asks, "Did this author write me as a big meanie just so he could say I deserved to get hurt?!" while Lincoln comments, "Geez, what a brute. I think I actually preferred it when I was a whiny crybaby."
  • Would Hit a Girl: The "hit" part is taken quite literally, when the story has Lincoln punch Lola in the eye.
  • You Keep Using That Word: Much to the ire of Luan, this story twice claims that a character made a joke, even though there was no joke.
