Tropes

  • Ambiguously Bi:
    • Gina found Dusty's cult sexy and touched herself to them so much she hurts her genitalia. While she is shown to love fat men, there are women in the group as well.
    • Dusty said that his followers offered their bodies for sex. Since it included males as well, it's likely he had sex with men as well.
  • Armoured Closet Gay: For part of the episode, the body positivity movement becomes a thinly-veiled metaphor for the LGBT community and when it does, the highly fatphobic Randall Crawford is revealed to be a fat guy himself. Dusty even makes a joke about this, referencing to the myriad of real-life homophobic politicians who have turned out to be homosexuals themselves.
Dusty: Steve Wiles, Randy Boehning, Mark Foley, Richard Curtis, Glenn Murphy, Ralphy Shortey, Larry Craig, [gasps for air and pants] There's more but I'm running out of breath.
  • Artistic License: Randall installed a rule that no one over 300 pounds may eat at buffets. However, Chris Christie was seen eating at the Golden Corral, when Christie himself weighs over 400 pounds.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Gina coughs when Randall calls the police department (minus Dusty) men.
Randall: Alright, I'm sorry. Men and Kevin.
[Gina hums with approval while Kevin slumps and sighs]
    • When it appears that Gina is touching herself in public, Bullet tries to tell her that she can't do that.
"Oh relax. I'm just looking for my key... to my masturbation hut." [proceeds to masturbate in said hut]
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Dusty's fat cult is full of this and Big Handsome Man to Gina, especially as they walk around naked and she feels compelled to masturbate to them. That said, they don't appear unattractive and look rather beautiful.
  • Big Eater:
    • Dusty and the rest of his cult adopt this attitude to avoid diets. They eat vast quantities of food. At a Denny's, they eat all of their food, rewrite bible stories to be about food, one background shot had them walking and eating food. Dusty had them go to the Promised land(The Golden Corral). When refused service due to their weight, Dusty throws tue manager out and he and his cult proceed to eat to their heart's content.
    • Chris Christie and his family are portrayed as this. Like Dusty's cult, they go around naked due to clothes not fitting them. Christie eventually joins Dusty's cult in partaking of food.
  • Big Handsome Man: Dusty's fat cult is full of this and Big Beautiful Woman to Gina, especially as they walk around naked and she feels compelled to masturbate to them. That said, a fair amount of the men don't appear unattractive and are rather handsome in their own way.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: The moral of the episode. Dusty is right that fat can be beautiful, Randall is right that obesity is unhealthy.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: This episode breaks the fourth wall to make a shout-out to the two creators of the show.
Dusty: The FBI must be out there, pulling a Waco.
Randall: Pulling a Waco? But that's Roger's job!
  • The Bus Came Back: Thester makes a re-appearance after being inexplicably absent all season. Now, he's gone through some changes and has since become fat and depressed.
Thester: I became depressed once I found out I looked like Patton Oswalt so I ate my feelings away, which only made me look more like Patton Oswalt.
  • Call-Back: A cutaway gag has Nancy Pelosi farting into her hands and then smelling it, referencing to a joke Anton made all the way back in Season 2's Tucker Carlson episode.
  • Cult: Dusty starts a neo-Christian religious cult of fat people, which revolves heavily around food and alters the stories of the bible to be more body positive.
Dusty: I know Jesus was fat because the bible is basically a cook book. The Garden of Eatin', The Ten Condiments, The Arc of the Coconut. Go lick the chocolate fountain. Let my pizza dough!
    Cultists: Praise the lard!
  • Compressed Vice: Played for Laughs. Randall is shown to be just as heavy as Dusty himself, even though every other episode shows him being significantly lighter than Dusty.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Dusty claims that he didn't start a cult.
"It's not a cult! These are just friends who do everything I say, offer me their bodies for sex, and occasionally kill people in my name. Does that sound like a cult to you?"
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Randall wishes to raid the Golden Corral and harm Dusty and his cultists, Kevin chooses to not harm Dusty. Even though Dusty and his cult were attracting Gina away from him, Kevin couldn't wish harm upon him. Eventually the rest of Paradise PD sans Randall join Kevin, not wishing to harm Dusty for Randall's petty feud with him and his cult.
  • Fat and Proud: Dusty's cult promotes fat pride and rejection of diets. After losing the right to wear their robes, they go around naked and see no problem in doing so.
  • Feud Episode: Randall and Dusty fight over Dusty's over-eating and Randall's harsh tactics on cracking down on obesity as Randall rationalizes that obesity is a huge killer in Paradise.
  • Godiva Hair: Dusty's female cult members have hair covering their breasts after the cult goes around naked.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After discovering that he's just as fat as the others, Randall decides to join Dusty's cult.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Throughout the episode, Dusty's fat cult is given a barrage of hilarious joke names by the other characters, mostly Randall. These puns are mostly just food-related puns on well-known cults from the real world, such as "Ranch Davidians", "Pie-entologists", and "Jehovah's Unfitnesses".
  • Hypocritical Humor: Bullet tells Gina that she is addicted to masturbating while he's in the middle of buying crack from Robby.
Bullet: Gina, are you masturbating again? Listen, I think you got a real problem. I know an addict when I see one.
Robby: You gonna buy this crack or what?
Bullet: Of course I'm gonna buy that crack! Seriously Gina, I think you're a junkie.
Robby: Hey, you still owe me for this crack, man.
Bullet: I'll suck you off later. Can't you see my friend's a junkie?
  • Messianic Archetype: Dusty has so much calories in his body, that he can turn water into grape juice just by touching it.
  • Naked People Are Funny: After the robes they wear are banned, Dusty and his cult go around naked. When Randall attempts to arrest them for indecent exposure, Dusty says their bellies hide their privates.
Dusty: Indecent Exposure? I don't see any private parts around here. Do you?
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Dusty says he knew he started a cult from the very beginning when telling Chief that being fat isn't gross.
  • Self-Abuse: Gina's constant masturbation damages her clitoris and after masturbating at the end, she needs to get a robotic one.
  • Take That!:
    • So many at real-life politicians who are gay themselves but shame other gays there was a list made of it since Dusty didn't have the breath to name all of them.
    • Florida is also portrayed as being full of inbred hillbillies.
    • Chris Christie is portrayed to be fat, stupid and naked because of how fat he is. Dusty said the following:
Dusty:I thought the only thing he ate was Donald Trump's ass.
    • John Goodman got a few due to him being formerly fat. First is when Randall asks Dusty to move his John Goodman looking ass up the rope. Kevin then says that he's thin now before Randall says that "he'll be back". Comes back as a Brick Joke when they annouce of rounding up fat people starting with John Goodman.
John Goodman: I'd knew I'd be back.
  • You Are Fat: Dusty is beaten black and blue with fat jokes, more so in this episode than any other.
