Recap / Orphan Black S 05 E 08 Guillotines Decide

Go To

Rachel is saved by Ferdinand. Felix returns with Adele and the clones help him prepare for his art exhibit. But Mrs. S. uses the occasion to silently further her own agenda with Rachel. While her plans succeed, they do so at incredible cost.

  • Back for the Dead: Gracie has a short scene in the previous episode before getting a Boom, Headshot! from Maddie this episode.
  • Bad Liar: Gracie nervously tells Mark that she has not located Helena. Mark doesn't buy it, and it ultimately results in Helena getting captured and Gracie killed.

  • Batman Gambit: Rachel agrees to Ferdinand's proposal to blackmail Neolution, only to give him an empty flash drive. She was hoping that the Neolution guards would kill him during his Villainous Breakdown. It doesn't work.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Ferdinand has this after he is shot in the neck by Mrs. S.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Maddie does this to Gracie.
    • Averted with Ferdinand to Mrs. S, when he was at close range and had the opportunity to do so. It comes back to bite him.
  • Breather Episode: This episode gives more focus to Felix's art gallery opening and Gracie spending time with Helena in the convent, with fewer scenes that focus on the Neolution conspiracy than the previous episodes have. Overall, the episode is comparatively lighthearted, even with the conspiracy scenes taken into account. Subverted near the end...
  • The Bus Came Back: Felix returns after being absent for 3 episodes while in Switzerland with Adele and Delphine. Colin also returns attending Felix's exhibit party, having last been seen in Season 2. Unfortunately, Ferdinand also returns.
  • Call-Back:
    • All the paintings that Felix had done of the clones over the past 4 seasons show up here. Even Beth Childs is featured.
    • Cosima was able to replicate several hundred doses of the Leda cure that she brought back from Revival with the intent of finding other Leda clones to give them the dose.
    • Pay special attention to the dance Cosima does and where her foot goes.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Mrs. S. had called Ferdinand to rescue Rachel knowing that she would be in trouble after helping to expose P.T. Westmoreland as a fraud. Good thing too, as she had just taken her own eye out the previous episode, and now Delphine and Mrs. S. want Rachel to find the missing files that would shut down Neolution for good.
  • Character Death: Gracie, Ferdinand, and Mrs. S all bite it by the end of the episode.
  • Dartboard of Hate: Turns out that Felix did make a painting of Rachel, on a platform that Cosima steps on. Cosima then proceeds to have some fun dancing on the painting while notably stomping on her "eye".

  • Driven to Suicide: Several of the Neolution board members did not take kindly to The Reveal that P.T. Westmoreland is a fraud, with some members killing themselves.
  • Due to the Dead: Turns out that besides all of the living clones, Felix also did a painting of Beth Childs with her police picture and ID. Art and Sarah meaningfully look up at it.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Mrs. S. uses her last bit of energy to take out Ferdinand with some guile and a hidden gun underneath her chair cushion.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Rachel is obviously still mad at Ferdinand for killing Vera in Episode 2 and tries to have Neolution to kill him. Neolution in the meantime, isn't too happy with Ferdinand trying to extort them either.
  • Eye Scream: Rachel's face, seen with a bloodied eye socket (with no eye), is not a pleasant sight.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After getting shot in the heart and knowing she just has a few short minutes to live, she asks Ferdinand to finish her off with a quick Double Tap. But before he proceeds, she asks him to give her a picture of Sarah and Felix that she can look at as she dies. This is subverted when it is revealed this was a distraction for her to grab a hidden gun from the chair she is sitting on. Once she takes out Ferdinand, this is played straight once again as she views the picture before she dies.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Looks like Mark Rollins was serious about turning Helena over to Coady to receive his cure.
  • Fatal Family Photo: The picture of Sarah and Felix with Mrs. S. gets some airtime before Mrs. S. gets shot, and is with her as she dies. Not to mention that it lended an assist in the dispatching of Ferdinand.
  • Genre Blindness: Ferdinand mocks Mrs. S. for not checking if he had a second gun hidden on his person, and not keeping hers close by. After he shoots Mrs. S., he promptly falls for this when Mrs. S. asks to view a picture of Sarah and Felix. Once he goes to retrieve the picture, and after casually looking it for a very long time, Mrs. S. is able to use his distraction to draw a hidden gun and kill him with a shot in the neck.
  • Mexican Standoff: Ferdinand and Mrs. S. do this. They ultimately put their guns down before Ferdinand reveals he had a second gun hidden on his person.
  • Mutual Kill: Ferdinand and Mrs. S.
  • Only in It for the Money: Ferdinand's ultimate motive. He would rather blackmail Neolution with the incriminating files and leave with a ginormous payday. Rachel doesn't agree, and ultimately, the flash disk he received doesn't have any files in it.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: Rachel ultimately decides to leave civilization and move to a remote place to live out her days. Ferdinand isn't interested in following Rachel and prefers a large payday from Neolution instead.
  • Twin Switch: Played with. Felix uses the clones (one at a time) to present the pictures for Alison, Cosima, and Sarah.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Ferdinand has this the moment he realizes that Rachel conned him.
  • Wham Episode: Gracie, Ferdinand, and Siobhan die and Helena is captured by Neolution.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Sarah and Felix both chew Mrs. S. out when it is revealed that Ferdinand was the source of the classified info that Mrs. S. had, knowing that he had killed Vera. They further chew her out when it is also revealed that Mrs. S. had contacted Ferdinand to rescue Rachel and that she and Delphine were dealing with both of them behind Sarah's back. Sarah only has a change of heart when it is revealed that Mrs. S. was able to get a large chunk of incriminating evidence of Neolution from Rachel that they can expose to the public.
    • Helena has this to Gracie after she finds her cellphone with a message from Mark. Gracie tells Helena that she never told Mark that she located Helena. It didn't matter as Mark figured out the location anyway based on Gracie's lies.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Variation. Ferdinand had the opportunity to perform a Boom, Headshot! on Mrs. S, but only shot her in the heart, which bought her enough time to kill him.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: After Ferdinand escapes the Neolution board and nearly chokes out Rachel, Rachel calls Mrs. S to warn her that he is coming. Rachel then ends the call, saying "goodbye", knowing that Mrs. S. may not survive the encounter.
