Recap / Orange Is The New Black S 05 E 04 Litchfields Got Talent

Go To

The inmates, still in full control of the prison, stage a mock TV-style talent show with the guards as contestants.

This Episode Provides Examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Alison gets one this time.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Suzanne believes in spirits but doesn't believe in ghosts.
  • Bilingual Dialogue: Exaggerated in a scene with Red and Blanca going through guards' records, where they actually have a brief trilingual dialogue mixing English, Russian, and Spanish — fully understanding each other.
  • Callback: Leanne makes Angie remember the time she was let out accidentally and realized she had nowhere to go.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Angie now has the gun and uses it...to throw a talent show.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Hapakuka mutters "Filthy fucking cunts" in Hawaiian after Leanne and Angie pants her in the bathroom.
  • Hidden Depths: The talent show brings this out for some of the guards, with one being revealed to have some serious pipes, while another male dancer performs like he's been a stripper for years.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Red talks about how she feels about growing old, feeling like a 27-year old until she ends up looking in the mirror and seeing herself.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted as Red talks about menopause after Blanca feels like she's hot.
  • Orphaned Punchline: The "He's not an eggplant, he's retarded" punchline comes back.
  • Polyamory: It's revealed in a flashback that Alison convinced her husband to take in a second wife to help make things easier, but she comes to resent the situation as time goes on.
  • Prisoner Performance: Inverted. The guards are forced to put on a talent show when they are held hostage at gunpoint during the riot.
  • Punishment Box: Caputo is locked up in a port-a-potty that is rather filthy.
  • Put on a Bus: Sophia gives herself up to the guards outside so she can get into Max to see Sister Ingalls. It ends up being All for Nothing when Sophia learns that Sister got out on compassionate release after getting pneumonia.
  • Real Women Don't Wear Dresses: Both Alison and Sankey don't think princesses are good role models for their young daughters.
  • The Reveal: Gloria was the one who took the gun when Leanne and Angie try to pants her.
  • Spooky Séance: Suzanne, Maureen and Brook throw a seance to communicate with Poussey's spirit. The pentagram is drawn in Hershey's syrup and the candle is a jar of Crisco.
  • Water Torture: Helen asks Alison how to waterboard someone. Her answer? "Join the military." That gets Sankey laughing.
Sankey: And they say Muslims ain't funny. You're a fucking riot.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Averted. Sankey, a white supremacist and Abdullah, a black Muslim both struggle with the same problem at the same time. But instead of bonding other it, realizing they're similar and becoming friends, Sankey refuses to talk to Alison and is left feeling like there's no-one in the prison who can understand what she's going through.
