Operation Montecristo (in French Opération Montecristo) is the sixteenth album of the comic book series XIII. It was published in 2004.

XIII, Jones, Carrington, Amos, Betty and Armand de Préseau have reached Costa Verde, but Maria Isabel de Los Santos, the president, jails them because the USA request their extradition and Costa Verde cannot risk a diplomatic crisis. When the prisoners are going to be handed over to the US authorities, they are kidnapped by a mysterious group.

Operation Montecristo provides examples of:

  • The Baroness: Unlike in her previous appearances, Felicity Brown is now a badass. She kills two soldiers to escape from the camp. Then she kills three CIA agents and the butler in Spencer's house. In the end, she shoots Spencer down.
  • Big Dam Plot: The CIA plans to blow up the dam of Montecristo to kill XIII and his friends and to destabilize the country.
  • Binocular Shot: Used when the CIA agents spy on XIII and his friends.
  • The Bus Came Back: The extradition of Felicity Brown is requested by the US, so she joins XIII, Jones, Amos and Carrington.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: XIII calls Mullway out for being a trafficker, an alcoholic and being only interested in gold.
  • Damsel in Distress: Jones is attacked by a CIA agent when she is exploring the underwater ruins. XIII has to save her.
  • Enemy Mine: Felicity Brown teams up with Carrington to fight Spencer, because Spencer betrayed her.
  • Flashback: A flashback shows Liam Mac Lane coming to Montecristo.
  • Gas Mask Mooks: The convoy bringing XIII and his friends to the airport is attacked by mysterious men wearing gas masks. Subverted, because they are later revealed to be good guys.
  • Genre Savvy: Carrington compares the story of Maximilian's gold with a TV series.
  • Important Haircut: Felicity has short hair now and she Took a Level in Badass.
  • A MacGuffin Full of Money: XIII and his friends decide to look for Maximilian's gold only because of its great monetary value (they need money because they are outlaws).
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: The CIA plans to destroy a dam to kill XIII and his friends and to destabilize the government of Costa Verde. Giordino thinks that it will look like an accident because the dam was built by the Soviets with poor quality materials.
  • Moment Killer: XIII is hugging Jones on the shore of the lake at night when Ben Carrington shows up to chat with them.
  • Operation: [Blank]: Operation Montecristo is the name of a CIA operation which involves destroying a dam to drown XIII and his friends and to destabilize the government of Costa Verde.
  • Previously on…: The previous episode in summed up in one page in the beginning.
  • Shout-Out: The third watch necessary to find the treasure is hidden in the church of a village named Montecristo. This village now lies beneath a lake. Montecristo is an obvious reference to The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, which involves a treasure hidden on an island named Monte Cristo.
  • Show Some Leg: Felicity suggests a soldier to have sex with her (she shows her breasts to convince him). She kills him as soon as he has removed her handcuffs.
  • Skinny Dipping: Jones swims in the nude in the lake.
  • Spiteful Spit: Felicity spits on the face of a soldier because he refuses to remove her handcuffs.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In her previous appearances, Felicity was an evil woman, but she only used her charms as weapons. Now, she still uses her charms, but, if necessary, she resorts to assault rifles too. In total, she kills seven people in this episode, and most of them are soldiers and CIA agents.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: In this episode, XIII and his friends help Mullway to find a watch which is a key to locate Maximilian's gold.
  • Underwater Ruins: The ruins of a village lie beneath Montecristo Lake. Jones and XIII explore them.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Giordino explains in details his plan: the CIA should blow up the dam; it would kill XIII and his friends and destabilize the country. The plan fails, of course.
  • Vulnerable Convoy: The convoy bringing XIII and his friends from the prison to the airport is attacked.
