This chapter aired on December 13th, 2010, during the first season.

The episode has the following tropes:

  • Big Brother Worship: Pinto has a lot of respect and love for his brother, and sees in him some great strength and bravery, saying that he's "The bravest one of ALL of the Octonauts". He finds even brave enough, to register him to the Annual Iron Clam Competition against Hugo, which no one wants to compete against (even when Peso is not an athlete)
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: When Peso wins the second competition, he doesn't only put the very first tiebreaker with Hugo, but it's the very first time that Hugo doesn't win straight away with the diving competition. He also breaks the streak when both, Hugo and Peso, end up in a tie during the last competition when both cross the finish line together.
  • Crowd Chant: There are 2 examples in this trope, both of them are the crow chanting either to Hugo or to Peso.
    • Hugo's chant: "Hugo, Hugo, of you we say! You're so good at Everything!"
    • Peso's chant: "Peso, Peso, of you we say! You may even win this thing!"
  • Defeat Means Respect: Implied. Hugo at the beginning of the competition looked and somewhat acted that he would win everything immediately, belittling Peso at times (Like when he "tried" to cheer him up when he lost the first competition saying that he almost lost too, only to tell him later that he actually won so they were completely different.) But after the competition, even when he couldn't understand at the beginning why he didn't leave him behind to win the race, he showed him some respect later on, by telling the judge that Peso deserves to get the winning trophy instead of him.
  • Determined Doctor: Peso is a medic after all things, and a medic has to be on all-time on duty, even if it is on helping his opponent on a race both are competing, while he gets his flipper injured. From making an improvised bandage out of seaweed, or taking him to the finish line when Hugo can't swim, Peso is always there to help. No matter what.
  • Down to the Last Play: After Peso wins the diving competition, it's all up to the swim competition to see who's the actual winner.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Hugo, after the mid-competition accident, gets his flipper injured enough to not be able to swim properly. That can cost him the entire race.
  • Got Volunteered: Peso had no idea that Pinto volunteered him on the race until it's way too late to back down.
    • Also, it doesn't help his anxiety by the fact that EVERYONE in his crew wants him to compete as well, after hearing the news.
  • Honor Before Reason: Justified. Peso had the chance to win the competition after Hugo hurts his flipper, but he decides not to. He explains that it is because finds something even more important than just winning, like making sure he will be ok after all. After all, he's the medic. It's in his morals.
  • Jerk Jock: Hugo, from the beginning of the race, until the accident.
    • It's pretty much more indirect than other examples though, he just gets the feeling that he is unstoppable because no one has stopped him, belittles their opponents indirectly, and even gets annoyed when Peso wins him over the second game, but at least he doesn't cheat to win the race!
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: It's explained a few times during the last competition. Hugo recognizes and tells Peso that the latter can win now that he is injured, and that he should use that opportunity.
    • Another case it's after the competition when he tells the judge to give the trophy to Peso since he went all the way to help him, even when he could have won the competition.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: Even when Peso has to use a diving helmet during the missions, he still can talk like any other sea creature underwater without the helmet. (Because he's a penguin)
  • Parental Abandonment: Kind of Implied. You expect since it's a big competition, and probably all of his family is out there, that Peso's dad may appear. But he doesn't. It's not sure why in-universe is the reason.
  • So Proud of You: Peso's mom shows that a lot, especially by the recurring phrase "My son, the ___"
    "My son, the Medic"
    "My son, the Athlete!"
    "My son, the Hero!"
    • His brother also shows pride over him, enough to volunteer him to the big race, and defending him all the time, as well as encouraging to keep going in the race (Specifically when he lost the first game)
  • The Big Race: The Iron Clam Competition it's a triathlon, after all, consisting of sliding, diving, and the swim race.
  • The Olympics: This episode takes place on the Big Penguin Race, and can be considered as one big Olympic event.
  • Training Montage: This appears when Peso decides to train for the race. Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, Pinto and even some Vegimals at times help his training, by lifting some gym weights, using the Gup A to help him maintain his swimming skills, and even taking the time when he dives and slides. Little by little, you see how much he progresses, until he can do all of those activities just before the competition.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: This one happens 2 times during the episode.
    • The first time happens during the last competition, where a whale accidentally crashes against some ice blocks, making some huge pieces to fall over Hugo and Peso, trapping them in some sort of cave without escape. Also, those hurt Hugo's flipper.
    • The second time happens during the rescue of the two penguins when Pinto wanted to help and got a Gup without anyone noticing. That ended up with him cutting the rope the team was using to take out the ice blocks, making the one they were lifting, fall even under the little cave, giving Peso and Hugo even less space to sit.
  • Victory Pose: After being declared a tie, both penguins lift the Iron clam (cut in half by Captain Barnacles, so each one has one side of it), meanwhile the crowd around them "Hoo-ray"s them.
  • Win-Win Ending: When both get to the finish line at the same time, making it a tie, the judge got itself in trouble, because he didn't know which one should win the competition. Both insist that the other has to win with different reasons (While Hugo says that Peso deserves it, Peso indicates that Hugo wants to win more than him, and he really doesn't care much). It ends up when Captain Barnacles breaks the trophy (which is an Iron Clam by the way)in half, giving it to each one. The game resulted in a tie.
