The Octonauts Race Against Time to stop a swarm of Crown-of-Thorns starfish from reaching the Great Barrier reef and a developing coral polyp.
The episode has the following tropes:
- Artistic License – Biology: Crown-of-thorns starfish spines are dangerous to both humans and marine animals.
- Ass Kicking Pose: Not exactly ass-kicking but the Octonauts do pose to defend the reef.
- Avengers Assemble: The Octonauts and the reef creatures ban together to defend the reef from the crown-of-thorns starfish.
- Badass Boast: The chorus to "A Thousand Pies" is this. For the reefFor the seaWe are standing side by sideTo protectTo resistWhen the hungry swarm arrivesBy our witsBy our heartsBy our teamworkAnd a thousand pies
- Big Damn Heroes: When the starfish army comes closer to the reef, Dashi, Shellington and Tweak came Justin Time, with the thousand pirate pies.
- Call-Back:
- Kwazii cooking Pirate Pie with the Vegimals is similar to cooking Pirate Stew in the episode "The Leafy Sea Dragons".
- Peso gets injured for the second time, first one was in "The Yellow-bellied Sea Snakes".
- To make it even more of a callback, the injured flipper is the same one as the one he broke in "The Yellow-bellied Sea Snakes"
- Calling Your Attacks: Barnacles, Inkling, Kwazii and Peso do this when defending the reef.
- Chekhov's Gun: Kwazii's pirate pie is the one thing needed to keep the starfish swarm away from the reef, because of the ingredient in the pie, coral slime.
- Creepy Jazz Music:
- Mr. Mound Coral's song "Trouble on the Reef".
- Kwazii's second song "Sea Monster from the Briny Blue".
- Declaration of Protection: The chorus of "A Thousand Pie". Doubles as a Badass Boast.
- Determinator: Corey's song "Little Bit" defines determinator. But I can take it, make itIf I never quitI hope a Little Bit can find a way to fit
- Farming Your Friend: In a well-meaning example, the Octonauts fill pies with slime that Corey the coral polyp and the Old Mound Reef excrete so that they can feed crown-of-thorns starfish.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Peso lets himself get injured to save Corey and Mr. Mound Coral from a crown-of-thorns starfish.
- Here We Go Again!: Kwazii says this when the rest of the starfish army comes closer.
- Hidden in Plain Sight: Turns out the closet in Kwazii's room is a secret room full of pirate treasure and recipes.
- "I Am Becoming" Song: The song "Forming the Coral Reef", when Peso helps Corey become coral.
- "I Am" Song: Corey's song "Little Bit".
- Major Injury Underreaction: Like in "The Yellow-Bellied Sea Snakes", Peso he doesn't react that badly when he got pricked by one of the crown-of-thorns starfish.
- Music for Courage: The song "A Thousand Pies".
- Musicalis Interruptus: "Little Bit" when Corey accidentally collides with the Gup-W.
- Musical Episode: This special contains 8 songs sung by the Octonauts and the reef creatures. "Little Bit", "Forming the Coral Reef" and "Tasty Reef" was even sung twice making for 11 musical numbers overall.
- Oh, Crap!: When Barnacles, Kwazii and Peso see the starfish swarm for the first timeBarnacles: Wow. That's more spikey arms than we can count...
- Pun: Peso says "They shall snot pass" which is a pun on "They shall not pass".
- Small Role, Big Impact: Even though the reef creatures are seen as background characters, they help the Octonauts defend the reef.
- The Song Before the Storm: Or in this case song before the swarm, "A Thousand Pies".
- Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The crown-of-thorns starfish go after the pirate pies to prevent them from eating the coral.
- Villain Song: Or in this case, an antagonist song sung by the Crown-of-Starfish song "Tasty Reef".
- Wham Shot: Kwazii has a secret room within his room.
- Win-Win Ending: The crown-of-thorn starfish gets something to eat (other than the coral), the reef is safe, and Corey has found his place in the reef.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Corey went from a small coral polyp to a piece of standing coral.
- You Shall Not Pass!: This doubles as a pun when Peso says this.Peso: They shall snot pass!
