Recap / OKKO Lets Be Heroes S 3 E 6 The KO Trap

Go To

K.O., Rad and Enid are caught in an especially devious trap.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Clone Ending: Comically invoked, as K.O. starts hitting Rad and Enid with rocks at the end to make sure they're not a third set of clones.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Enid notes that the first room they're trapped in has no doors, no windows, and no apparent way out. Rad adds that there's no Wi-Fi, either.
  • Badass Bookworm: While it's already been shown that Professor Venomous is a genius Mad Scientist, he proves here that he's no slouch in combat either, as he counters or dodges all of the heroes' attacks and uses dirty tricks to overcome them and win.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: This is the first episode in which the Bodega heroes directly battle Venomous himself (rather than just something he sends to attack them), and they do not actually manage to beat him. After they start fighting him and put him on the ropes, he hits a button that causes the floor to launch them out of the building back to the Bodega.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After K.O. escapes his box trap, he runs into Enid and Rad, and learns that they, too, were caught in similar traps with goo clones. Then, after the three of them seem to have cornered Venomous, we learn that this Rad and Enid are also goo clones and Venomous made a double-layer trap to torment K.O. further.
  • Big "NO!": K.O.'s response to discovering that the Rad and Enid with him in Venomous's office were a second set of goo clones.
  • Boss Subtitles: K.O. expresses his doubt that the trap was actually Boxman's, since it seems too nasty for him to have thought of. He concludes it was Venomous, and when they burst into his office, we get:
It was PROFESSOR VENOMOUS All Along!
  • Brick Joke: Darrell says that now that the Bodega has no doors, squirrels will go in and steal all the food. Sure enough, there is a shot of squirrels going inside. At the end of the episode, the squirrels are seen running out with food.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When K.O. and (actually goo clones of) Enid and Rad burst into Venomous's office, he seems mostly unperturbed and it takes him a second to remember that he had Darrell put them in a trap, stating that a villain of his caliber has so many things going on at once that it's hard to remember every devious trap he sets up for every hero. Though, considering how much he clearly delights in their torment (especially K.O.'s), he may have been bluffing about this to make him K.O. even more angry.
  • Clones Are People, Too: The goo clones have all the personality and memories of the people they're a copy of—Venomous even says they have souls. That one would empathize with them similarly to their genetic sources is essentially the whole reason Venomous created them.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Professor Venomous. He doesn't appear to have any powersnote  and is facing three heroes who do, so he instead battles the heroes by throwing a beaker of chemicals at them for them to inhale, trying to shoot them with a ray gun, and using a floor tile trap to send them flying.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Darrell (or at least the Darrell who stole the Bodega doors) still has his tentacle-arms (or, as K.O. calls them, his "creepy bio-enhancements") that Venomous made for him from "All in the Villainy".
    • K.O. briefly uses his dog-face to entertain Rad and Enid, as another nod to how the three of them have actually been animals wearing human costumes since "We've Got Fleas".
    • Enid (or rather, the goo clone of her) once again shows of her mime skills when serving K.O. and Rad "dinner" in their box-prison.
  • Evil Laugh: Professor Venomous gives a few at different times in response to K.O.'s various reactions.
  • Fake Kill Scare: Professor Venomous locked the Bodega employees in separate rooms with copies of their friends, then killed the copies to study their reactions. However, Venomous emphasizes being copies doesn't mean the deceased were "fake", which disturbs the heroes even more.
  • For the Evulz: Venomous's actions towards the Bodega trio in this episode were just to emotionally torture them and observe their reactions.
  • Grossup Closeup: As Venomous explains his intent to break down and "dissect" the Bodega team, his face is slightly more detailed, showing off his sharp teeth and a trickle of drool.
  • Irony: After getting trapped in the box-shaped room, Enid remarks that it must have took a lot of restraint from Boxman to not have tried the plan earlier. Then it's later shown off that it wasn't Boxman's plan, but Professor Venemous' name.
  • Kick the Dog: Professor Venomous reveals he regularly creates and murders clones of people for research purposes, even though he fully considers them people.
  • Luck-Based Search Technique: Looking around the room intentionally for an exit reveals nothing. When Enid casts a magic ritual to escape, she accidentally steps on a tile that opens a hole in the roof.
  • Lured into a Trap: Darrell took the doors of the Bodega and brought them into Box More. When Rad, K.O., and Enid follow after, they fall into Venomous' trap.
  • Never Say "Die": Even though this episode involves a lot of killing of the goo clones, none of the characters say "die", "dead", or "killed" about them, using words like "perish", "gone", or "destroyed" instead.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: After they meet back up, KO, Rad and Enid realize that the trap they were caught in was way too sadistic for it to be a trap Boxman created.
Enid: So… Boxman simulated the same nightmare scenario for each of us… separately?
K.O.: Just so that we'd all think each other were really… gone?
Enid: Oh, that's so MESSED UP!
    Rad: What is Boxman's PROBLEM?!
K.O.: (Sniffs) Y'know… this doesn't really feel like a Boxman trick. It's too nasty. It's gotta be someone else. Someone like…
Camera zooms out, then focuses on a door with a purple V on it.
  • Poke the Poodle: Darrell stole the doors off the Bodega, which Enid points out is barely even a criminal act. However, it was part of Venomous' plan to trap the heroes (whether or not Darrell knew).
Darrell: Nuh-uh! Without these doors, little squirrels will come into the bodega, and eat all your food!
Cut to a dramatic shot of the bodega, with two squirrels entering
  • Sealed Room in the Middle of Nowhere: Rad, Enid, and K.O. are knocked out with gas and wake up in a sealed room—or rooms, as it turns out—deep beneath Box More headquarters.
  • Shout-Out: Clones of people made to deceive the original melt into goo when exposed/destroyed, just like in the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero episode "There's No Place Like Springfield".
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Venomous really shows off here how much of one he is. He quite casually tells the Bodega heroes that he made the clones and tricked the originals into watching them die just to push them to the breaking point and make them easier to "dissect", but the clones were still "real" people with the unique memories of the subject they were cloned from, and had real souls. The trio is visibly very disturbed to hear all this. Even worse, the Rad and Enid in this confrontation were also goo clones, apparently just so Venomous could see K.O.'s reaction in person when he broke down at learning this.
  • Tally Marks on the Prison Wall: Enid leaves marks on the wall of the room they're trapped in with a shuriken. A Reveal Shot shows she was measuring the time in minutes, and they've only been in there for less than an hour.
  • This Was His True Form: When fatally damaged, the clones revert into the green goo they were made from.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: K.O. is enraged at Venomous for tormenting the Bodega team and callously murdering their clones, and all resolve to take him more seriously from now on.
K.O.: You know, mommy says hating others is wrong... but I think I hate Professor Venomous.
  • Toilet Humor: When Venomous calls Fink to come help him install anti-virus software, she replies that she's on the toilet. Right after he sends the Bodega trio packing, she comes out of the bathroom and we get this exchange:
    Fink: (Deadpan) Hey. Toilet's broke.
    Venomous: *Sigh* Again?
