Summary

No 1 Sentai Gozyuger Ep 8 Between Right And Wrong The Ringed Hunter Recap
Rikuo: Good Morning! Your favourite idol Rikuo Byakuya is here.
I managed to charm Sumino in the recent heartthrob battle—
Sumino: Hey, don't tell them these lies!
Unbelievable. You can't take your eyes off him for even a second.
Much more importantly, who's that gun-wielding warrior?

The Gozyugers learn about existence of the Bridan's ace known as Ring Hunter Garyudo when he attacked Meguru, unsure about his intentions. Meanwhile, Hoeru reunites with his older brother Hisamitsu, who was presumed lost in No One World. After learning that he goes by Kuon and owns an A.I. company, Hoeru eagerly follows him around after getting iced out of a delivery job by Ryugi.

However, is Kuon really who he seems to be...?

Tropes

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kuon initially starts off the episode being a slightly distant, but still kind older brother to Hoeru, showing him around his A.I. company and giving him sushi for lunch. But this is quickly revealed to be a ruse 2/3rds into the episode as Kuon demoralizes Hoeru about his lack of desire, which subsequently causes him to go on a rampage against the team.
  • Break Them by Talking: Kuon essentially destroys whatever will to fight Hoeru has by pointing out his lack of desire, causing the latter to turn on the rest of the Gozyugers. It's to the point where Fire Candle decides Hoeru isn't worth finishing off, and Hoeru simply tosses aside the Gozyu Wolf ring after being cornered by his erstwhile teammates.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with the rest of the Gozyugers turning on Hoeru after he declared them his enemies and learning he is Garyudo's brother, made worse by a demoralized Hoeru throwing away his Ring and leaves the team on the grounds of having no wish to fight for.
  • Dual Wielding: Garyudo turns his summoned Gosei Red and Akaninger into their Skick Sword and Ninja Ichibantou, and wields both swords in this manner.
  • Foreshadowing: As Ryugi and Kinjiro make their way back home from a delivery job, Kinjiro stops to buy some food for Hoeru. When Ryugi asks him why he's buying food to someone who's essentially his rival, Kinjiro replies that he'd rather befriend him until they have to fight. Soon enough, both find themselves facing Hoeru much earlier than they expected.
  • Heroic BSoD: Hoeru eventually suffers this after his brother calls him out on his lack of a wish. In the end he doesn’t even react to the rest of the Gozyugers about to fight him for his rings before announcing that he quits.
  • Honor Before Reason: King Candler almost defeats Tegasword Red, however Fire Candle couldn't deal the finishing blow because Hoeru isn't being himself, and spares the Gozyuger as his death wouldn't give him the satisfaction he wants.
  • Lost in Translation: The Goseiger pun in the episode title is within the "Right and Wrong" phrase (as it's pronounced "Seija" in Japanese), making this episode one of the more tricker ones to include a reference to said team.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Ryugi unwittingly set off the episode's chain of events by choosing Kinjiro to go on an errand with him rather than Hoeru, as this leaves Hoeru alone to mind Tegasword Cafe and thus running into Kuon, who then proceeds to manipulate his younger brother.
  • Not Worth Killing: Fire Candle stops short of finishing off Hoeru because he's realized that his rival doesn't have his heart in it, and therefore wouldn't give him the satisfaction of a victory.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: A villainous example. Garyudo had already defeated Universe Aka Ninger, Gosei Red, Spade Ace, Geki Red and Denzi Red at this point, though only the former three were shown being defeated through a flashback.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The rest of the team immediately pick up that something is wrong with Hoeru after he declares them his rivals, knowing that he's been disinterested in the No. 1 competition since the start of the series. However, this doesn't prevent them from turning on him at the end of the episode, believing that he's genuinely turned on them.
  • Out of Focus: The episode centers on Hoeru and his relationship with his newly resurfaced brother, and to a lesser extent involves Ryugi and Kinjiro, thus leaving Rikuo and Sumino only making an appearance in the Previously on… segment and appearing only in-suit otherwise.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The climax of this episode stems from the other Gozyugers learning Garyudo is Hoeru's brother but unaware of the latter being manipulated by the former into attacking them, turning on Hoeru as they believe he is not taking the No.1 competition seriously. Hoeru, on the other hand, is so demoralized from his conversation with Kuon that he quits the team altogether instead of giving them a proper explanation.
  • That Man Is Dead: Kuon insists throughout the episode that he's no longer Hisamitsu due to his experiences in the No One's world. He chose the name "Kuon" to represents his desire to create a world where everybody can fulfill their wishes.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The A plot revolves around Hoeru reuniting with his long-lost brother while discovering an unfortunate truth in the process, while the B plot concerns Ryugi and Kinjiro running errands for the cafe, discussing their team dynamic in the process.
  • Wham Episode: The episode starts out fairly happy, with Hoeru happily reuniting with his older brother. However, the episode takes a sharp turn for the worst as Kuon reveals himself to be a massive Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, using Hoeru's lack of desire to turn him against the team. As a result, the rest of the Gozyugers completely turn against Hoeru due to his rampage and learning he is Garyudo's brother, mistakenly believing that he's taking the No. 1 competition seriously now. In response, unaware that Kuon is Garyudo, Hoeru quits being a Gozyuger since he doesn't have an actual wish.
