The ninja set sail for the Dark Island and the Temple of Light to unlock their true potentials and charge Lloyd's powers to allow them defeat the Overlord and his Stone Army. The ship crashes on their way and they are marooned on a small island where they find Zane's believed to be dead father. Trapped there by a sea monster, he was forced to create weapons and vehicles for Samukai.
This episode provides examples of:
- Back from the Dead: Zane's father was resurrected with an elixir Samukai provided and was forced to create vehicles for him.
- Defensive "What?": Cole says "What? It's catchy" when Lloyd looks at him for humming the theme tune.
- Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Cole whistles the Ninjago Overture when the ninja are repairing the Bounty.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Dr. Julien was forced to help Samukai, but he clearly regrets it and was worried that Zane would think him a monster for his actions.
- Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: The Leviathan keeping Dr. Julien trapped at the lighthouse isn't evil, and Zane setting it free from its chains causes it to leave peacefully.
