Recap / 9-1-1 S3E9 "Fallout"

Go To

Even though she is cleared from the deadly car accident she was a part of, Hen is still racked with guilt and tosses up the idea of leaving the LAFD. A face from Hen’s past helps her with her decision. After asking for help with his anger, Eddie is introduced to an old friend of Bobby’s. Maddie receives a call for help from a familiar face.

The 118 is summoned to the home of a young woman named Olivia who ended up being an unfortunate victim of a meteorite impact that, thanks to her weighted blanket she just got delivered to her, minimized the pain she was in, and she is taken, couch, blanket, and all, to the hospital to be treated for having a literal hole in her from the meteorite, which was still sizzling in the crater in the floor.

Meanwhile, Hen, Eddie, and Maddie are being counseled regarding recent trauma for them, such as Maddie with Doug, Hen killing Evelyn because of the traffic light malfunction, and Eddie regarding Christopher.

Athena, back on the beat after her suspension following arresting Emmet's killer, is furious to find that May's report she's working on is not about the tsunami, but of Athena and seeing her as an enemy rather than her mother. Athena speaks with her ex-husband about May's report, still outraged over how May portrays her in it, and her ex suggests she tell May the truth, despite whatever hostility she has between herself and May, but Athena is unmoved.

Hen is still feeling wretched about the accident that killed Evelyn, and despite Bobby telling her that it wasn't her fault as they figured out why the traffic light malfunctioned, Hen feels she is not ready to return to duty yet. Talking to Chimney, she mentions that Karen is going to take Hen somewhere to help alleviate her guilt over Evelyn's death and convince her to return to duty. Chimney encourages her to do it as he wants to have her back on duty with him since she's his partner.

At the 911 center, Maddie is called by the woman from before, who asks for her help as her husband attacked her again. When Maddie arrives, the wife reveals that she shot her husband. As Maddie tries to help the husband and they need to call 911 and get medical help for him, the wife refuses, but Maddie finally convinces her to cave and allow Maddie to call her office and request assistance at her location after revealing how she had to kill her own husband to save her own life. LAPD and LAFD arrive in minutes, and while the husband is rushed to the hospital, the wife is also treated before being arrested for attempted murder.

Hen and Karen arrive at the retreat, and Hen recognizes Stacey as the person who inspired her to become a paramedic after she saved Stacey's life. Nevertheless, Hen is still blaming herself for Evelyn's death and wonders why God made it that way. Hen believes she can only trust herself and her instinct, otherwise she's unfit to continue her duty as an LAFD paramedic.

Maddie and Buck are at Cedars-Sinai, where the LAPD report that the husband shot himself, but it is revealed to be a cover story as the husband wanted to spare his wife and apologize for his abuse to her. Despite that, Maddie is so rattled that she leaves without Buck joining her when he sees how shaken she was after hearing how the couple made up after how they nearly ruined their lives because of the husband's abuse of his wife. Buck voices the situation to Eddie, and they surmise it caused Maddie to rethink things, but it also causes Buck to try and apologize to Eddie for the lawsuit, but Eddie appears still sore with Buck over the lawsuit and refuses to forgive him, but playing some video games with Christopher seems to help patch things up between them.

Hen and Karen speak with Stacey at the retreat, and listening to Stacey helps Hen finally understand that she needs to let go of the past and guilt over what happened with Evelyn and move on.

Elsewhere, a hazardous waste disposal truck stops at a gas station so the driver can check the manifest, but while checking the magnesium ingots they're carrying, he finds that he's also carrying dangerous Class-III Radioactive materials, Cobalt-60. As the truck departs, he warns his protégé of the danger of their cargo, but not paying attention to a construction site ahead, they crash the truck, and a truck rear-ending them ignites the magnesium ingots, placing the Cobalt-60 in catastrophic danger of releasing its contents and causing a radiological disaster.

The 118 are called to the scene, and when warned of the Cobalt-60 by the driver, immediately request the LAFD HAZMAT and Liquid Nitrogen units to help put out the fire. Captain Nash stays to help the driver while everyone else clears out, despite when the magnesium fire finally ruptures the Cobalt-60 drums and radiation levels spike through the roof to gamma levels. Thankfully, HAZMAT and Liquid Nitrogen arrive and the fire is extinguished, but the 118 fear for Captain Nash since, despite minimal fallout, he probably took a lethal dose of gamma radiation from the Cobalt-60 as he's decontaminated by the HAZMAT team before being taken to the hospital for further analysis.

At the hospital, Athena is with Bobby as the doctor arrives to reveal the diagnosis of Bobby's contamination from the Cobalt-60: The tests show that he's still in good health, but they are watching for any long-term effects. If Bobby is fine after 6 weeks, he'll be cleared of any long-term contamination concerns.

Hen and Karen return home, tired and exhausted, but it is clear that their little trip did help them out a lot, especially Hen with her guilt over Evelyn's death, finally putting it behind her.

Bobby and Athena return to find Athena's ex and children having made dinner for them, though worried about Bobby after learning about the tunnel fire, and the driver, Ernest, preparing to testify about what happened, even if it means his bosses will make his life a living hell for telling the truth about the cargo he was carrying so it will put them out of business in retaliation from lawsuits by the state, Feds, and OSHA. Athena and May patch things up as well.

The episode ends as we see the resulting fallout and aftermath of everything that happened in the episode during a voiceover recap from Hen as she returns to work at the 118: Ernest goes before the press to confess to what happened with the nuclear waste so people are aware of it, Olivia goes viral about her meteorite incident, becoming very popular, and life returns to normal at Station 118 as Hen is able to take the driver's seat of the ambulance again, much to Chimney's amusement and happiness.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Heroic BSoD: Hen is suffering from one after the accident with the young girl she accidentally killed due to a malfunctioning traffic light, despite all attempts by Bobby, Athena, and the others assuring her it wasn't her fault. It is enough that she considers quitting the LAFD.
  • It's All My Fault: Hen assumes this with the accident that killed a young girl, despite all evidence proving she was not at fault.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The 911 dispatch center when Bobby warns them they have a nuclear threat on their hands with Cobalt-60 being threatened by the magnesium fire they responded to.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The driver of the industrial waste truck when he sees they are carrying deadly Cobalt-60, a Class-III Radioactive dangerous good, alongside the magnesium ingots.
    • Bobby has one when Ernest, the driver, warns him of the Cobalt-60 and he realizes they have radioactive materials in a vital part of Los Angeles, putting the whole city in danger.
