Go To

The 118 joins forces with numerous other firehouses when a massive earthquake destroys the integrity of a high-rise hotel. Athena is stuck on and must deal with the wreckage of a freeway overpass. Maddie has to deal with her first crisis while working as a 911 dispatcher.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Asshole Victim: Harlow, the boss in Room 1104. He'd been sexually harassing a female employee before the earthquake, and he continues making slimy remarks as the firefighters work to try to rescue him. An aftershock caused the glass to give out from beneath him and he fell to his death.
  • Before the Dark Times: After the initial earthquake, the episode shifts 2 hours before the quake.
  • Big Disaster Plot: This episode revolves around a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hits LA.
  • Call-Back: In the episode's first quarter, Athena stops her car on the collapsed bridge, the 118 takes cover and the call center takes refuge. This moment is an extended variation of the Wham Shot last episode.
  • Cliffhanger: Literally. The episode ends with Ali hanging desperately from the first responder's hand over the edge, threatening her with a fatal fall if her grip loosens.
  • Disaster-Dodging Dog: Paisley the dog survives the hotel collapse without a scratch.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Not evil-detecting, but Paisley might have sensed the earthquake before it even happened.
  • First Day from Hell: The episode takes place during Maddie's first day as a 911 dispatcher. Soon after her first call, the earthquake hits and makes her job a lot harder than usual.
  • Friend to All Children: Buck says that he loves kids when Eddie talks about Christoper.
  • Hope Spot: Marvin feeling good about saving someone's life combined with Athena's You Are Better Than You Think speech give the impression that Marvin will turn his life around. He doesn't. He keeps stealing cars until he eventually dies stealing a car two hours after being bailed out of jail.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Both a sleazy boss and the female employee he's been harassing are caught in the earthquake, with the boss pinned against a window. While the 118 rescue the woman in time, the boss falls after the window he's laying on breaks, sending him to his death.
  • Le Parkour: While not jumping over buildings, Marvin does display some awesome gymnastic-style moves while running from police.
  • Men Are the Expendable Gender: Lampshaded by the Weinstein stand-in when he complains that "women and children first" might not be the best policy right now before he falls to his death.
  • Missing Child: A young girl named Kat is with her parents at a hotel's restaurant, when she gets up to go to the bathroom. When the earthquake hits, the family take shelter under the tables nearest to them. The floor collapses under Kat and she goes missing under beneath rubble of the hotel, much to her parents' horror.
  • Noodle Incident: Athena reveals that Marvin is being arrested for the third time this year. Whether the other times were from grand theft auto or other incidents is unknown.
  • Ominous Crack: The boss is pinned between the window and some furniture after the earthquake subsides. All this combined weight cracks the window, and it grows bigger with each passing minute.
  • Shout-Out: "You would think after 14 seasons of Grey's Anatomy that people would know this stuff?"
  • Title Drop: "This quake was a 7.1".
