Tropes in this episode:

  • The Big Rotten Apple: Jess sees New York as a dirty, dangerous city. Talking with Holt makes her realize she subconsciously associates it with her breakup in the pilot.
  • The Cameo: Coach appears in The Stinger. The gang randomly runs into him on the street.
  • Class Reunion: The gang is in New York for Schmidt's high school homecoming.
  • Crossover: With Brooklyn Nine-Nine; this episode takes place concurrently with "The Night Shift". Schmidt's mother's car is commandeered by Jake Peralta with Jess at the wheel and she winds up at the precinct; Boyle and Nikolaj are stuck at a subway station with wannabe buskers Nick and Winston.
  • The Roast: Subverted. Schmidt tries to roast his high school classmates but winds up embarrassing himself until Cece steps in.
  • Street Performer: Nick and Winston are stuck on a subway station with no money. Seeing a man drumming on buckets rake in cash, Winston decides to act like a busker, only he has no idea what he's going to do. His plan is to act like he's about to do something, stalling for time until the next train boards while people throw money in a cup; this is ruined when the trains are delayed. Eventually, Winston and Nick pile random stuff and attempt to jump over it; Winston trips, and Nick just crashes into the pile. The audience loves it.
