Recap / My Little Pony 'n Friends E41: "Baby, It's Cold Outside 1"

Go To

The ponies wake up to find that it's snowed during the night, and gleefully rush out to play in the snow, have snowball fights and build snowponies. Only Galaxy seems a bit put out by this, since it's not generally a good sign when it snows in the middle of summer. The other ponies make it quite clear that they do not care about this and go back to their play.

The scene moves to a palace of ice, where a penguin prince and his anatid amigo are going to see the penguin king. The latter, King Charlatan, has got it into his head to freeze the whole world, after which only worthy creatures, such as penguins, will be able to survive and he will rule everything. The kids have some concerns with this plan, since Prince Edgar has some philosophical objections to genocide as a concept and Sunny the duck can't help but notice that ducks don't do too well in arctic climates. In response to this input, King Charlatan turns Sunny to ice where he stands.

Back in snowy Dream Valley, Galaxy's attempts to bring up the unnaturalness of summer snows continue to fall on deaf ears until the temperature plummets to such a degree that the rainbow itself freezes, at which point the others are forced to concede that she has a point. The ponies decide to get Megan for help, but as she's currently on the other side of the rainbow and the rainbow's frozen this takes a bit of doing. Surprise eventually manages to fly over, and finds Megan waiting. The cold's been seeping in on her side of things as well, and she's taken the time to prepare knitted wing-warmers for Surprise to wear on the flight back.

Once in Dream Valley, Galaxy states that their best bet for finding the source of this cold is to head north, where they eventually reach the penguins' domain. There, they find a giant ice castle surrounded by an icy maze. It's much too cold for the pegasi to fly over it — their wings are freezing over — and so they must cross it on foot, a feat complicated when they find an abominable snowman living in the labyrinth.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Beast in the Maze: An abominable snowman guards the icy labyrinth around King Charlatan's palace, and attacks the heroes when they try to cross it.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: In the ice maze, the ponies are attacked by a white-furred yeti with pronounced, duckbill-like lips and blue skin around its eyes.
  • Cassandra Truth: Galaxy is concerned about the unexpected snowy weather. Unfortunately, Truly and the other ponies completely ignore her and decide to just have fun in the snow. It isn't until the water gets too cold for the baby sea ponies and the rainbow freezes up that they see that Galaxy was right.
  • Evil Plan: Charlatan wants to freeze the world so that it'll be suitable only for penguins.
  • Eye Beams: King Charlatan can shoot ice beams from his eyes.
  • Only Sane Woman: Galaxy. She's the only pony to suspect there's something wrong about it snowing in the middle of summer.
  • Polar Bears and Penguins: The realm of the penguin King Charlatan lies in the far north of the world.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: King Charlatan has this approach towards morality — sticking to the rules of ethics is for people who don't dictate them, as far as he's concerned.
When you are king, you may decide what is and is not right. But I am king now, and what I say is law!
  • Stock Sound Effects: The door to King Charlatan's palace makes the Star Trek "swoosh" sound when it slides open.
