"A surprise?"

"Save! Rescue Training!" is My Hero Academia's first OVA, set after the USJ Arc.

Four days after the villains' invasion on USJ, Class 1-A returns there for their rescue training. Thirteen and Aizawa oversee the exercises; however, a mysterious villain who had apparently been hiding in the complex since the USJ incident takes out Todoroki and attacks the class. Although Thirteen and Aizawa urge the students to run away, they instead take on the villain together. When this fails, Midoriya devises a strategy to rescue Todoroki and attack the villain at the same time, resulting in him getting stuck onto Mineta's spheres. The villain then reveals himself to be All Might in disguise and had planned this as a 'surprise' for the students so they could stay on their toes following the USJ attack.

Tropes

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When Bakugo complains about having to rescue Midoriya, Tsuyu says that he has to do it because it's Anime Festa. Uraraka does the same thing when Bakugo complains about having to work with Midoriya.
  • Large Ham: Iida again overacts his victim assignment to the point that Uraraka can't stop laughing about it.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Subverted. When classmates comment that Bakugo tends to rush in without thinking, Midoriya considers that it is, in fact, strategic — he's doing so in order to buy time for the class to escape.
  • Male Gaze: Mineta gets an eyeful of his female classmates' butts, Momo, Mina, and Tsuyu specifically.
  • Previously on…: The USJ attack arc is summarized by Aizawa at the beginning and framed as a report on the incident.
  • Ship Tease: Tsuyu blushes at being dropped in Midoriya's arms, which causes Midoriya to blush as well.
  • Super-Strength: The villain is strong enough to level several buildings with one stomp and can take on the entire class one-handed...because he's All Might.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Between Todoroki and Bakugo when forced to work together. Todoroki can't be bothered to put up with Bakugo's Hair-Trigger Temper, and Yaoyorozu has to keep the peace between them. Later, Bakugo is again loath to work with Midoriya as the rescuers.
  • Unspoken Plan Guarantee: Midoriya never explains his plan to trap the villain onto Mineta's spheres, but it works.
  • The Worf Effect: The class is spooked when they see the villain carrying Todoroki's body since they acknowledge Todoroki as their strongest classmate — hence, this villain must be a threat. This is implied to have been invoked by All Might since he specifically seeks out Todoroki to help him.
