Recap / Monster Rancher S1 E26: Melcarba

Go To

While running in a thunderstorm from a group of Jaggernauts, the Searchers find an even worse problem when a giant robot named Melcarba awakens and attacks them.

Nothing is capable of stopping Melcarba, and the Searchers are forced to run... until Genki creates a lightning rod to bring it down. Meanwhile, Gray Wolf hears of their ingenuity and decides to face them himself.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Ass Kicks You: While fighting against the Jaggernauts, Genki skates backwards into one in order to pull off this manuever.
  • Battle in the Rain: Serves as the climax.
  • The Berserker: Referenced in the original title, 'Berserk Warrior Merkava'. Thanks to its programming, Melcarba simply will not STOP after being activated.
  • Chekhov's Gun: While fighting the Jaggernauts, Genki skates into and trips over a pile of old pipes. He later uses one of these same pipes against Melcarba, lodging it into the space where its head connects to its body.
  • Cue the Rain: The episode starts with a vicious downpour, with the Searchers briefly taking shelter inside a giant tree before it's split apart by lightning. The rain persists throughout their struggle to deal with the Jaggernauts and Melcarba.
  • Cue the Sun: Though the rain doesn't stop immediately after Melcarba is taken down, the following day proves to be bright, clear and sunny.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Suezo walks straight into a broken cannon turret that happened to be jutting out into his path, right at eye level.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The fate of the tree the group initially shelters in helps Genki realize how to deal with Melcarba.
    • While exploring the ancient ruins, Genki activates a tourism guide bragging about the state-of-the-art faculty being able to mass produce robots like Melcarba.
  • From Bad to Worse: The heroes go from dealing with a heavy thunderstorm to being pursued by the Jaggernauts, to being chased by the untiring Melcarba.
  • The Juggernaut: Melcarba is virtually unstoppable, being able to defeat an entire platoon of Jaggernauts and take everything the Searchers can throw at it.
  • Leave Him to Me!: The episode ends with Gray Wolf deciding its time he faces the Searchers himself.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Played With; The Jaggernauts are unintentionally responsible for activating Melcarba with their attacks, triggering their abrupt and brutal dispatching at its hands. Unfortunately, that leaves our heroes dealing with the rampaging robot on their own.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: The Jaggernauts, complete with Red Eyes, Take Warning, thanks to being Beaclon/Joker hybrids working for Gray Wolf.
  • Shock and Awe: The Searchers finally manage to take Melcarba out through a lightning rod setup.
  • Stand Your Ground: Once it becomes clear that they can't outrun Melcarba, Hare has the group circle back around to the old factory and attempt to take it out via ambush. This morphs into the Searchers standing their ground in an increasingly desperate battle.
  • Stern Chase: Melcarba tirelessly pursues the heroes.
  • Stunned Silence: The Searchers fall into this after their original shelter splits in two and falls apart around them.
  • Taking the Bullet: Narrowly avoided by Suezo, who knocks Genki out of the way of a deluge of fireballs, managing to not get hit himself in the process.
  • Tears from a Stone: After Melcarba is finally brought down, its lifeless body is seen with the rain coming down over its eyes like it's crying.
  • Tempting Fate: While the others are running for the forest, Suezo stays where their original shelter was, commenting on how 'lightning never strikes twice' in the same place and claiming it's far safer there. Then a lightning bolt strikes inches away from where he's standing.
  • Tragic Villain: Genki comes to see Melcarba as one; the robot has literally no control over itself, driven by its programming to continue fighting despite there being no real reason or purpose for it. This ultimately leads to its destruction at the heroes' hands, with Genki lamenting how that technology could have been used for much better things.
  • The Worf Effect: The role the Jaggernauts fill in this episode. Not only do they outnumber the Searchers, but they are among some of the strongest monsters in the Monster Rancher world. However, the moment Melcarba activates, it easily dispatches the entire hoard, demonstrating how powerful it is.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: Variation; after Melcarba is taken down, the Searchers watch the rest of the promotional video bragging about its offensive capabilities, and Genki wonders why its creators focused on building war machines rather than applying that technology towards other areas.
