Do you come from the land down under? Where ghouls glow and then wonder? Can't you hear, can't you hear that thunder? You better swim, you better take cover
Lagoona's been dragged out of Monster High and dropped back in the reef (with friends and Toralei in tow) and can't come back up until she's fixed an overarching freaky flaw. As if this wasn't terrifying enough, she runs into old "friend" Kala Mer'ri, along with betta bitches Peri and Pearl Serpentine.

This is the final special for Monster High animated by Nerd Corps Entertainment.

Tropes From Under the Sea

  • An Aesop: Don't try to change who you are because of bullying, whether it's refusing to do something you love, or being a good person.
  • Animation Bump: In a lot of scenes it's hard not to notice choppiness; but scenes like the geyser cave, the ghouls dancing with Lagoona in the stadium, and (even though it gets kind of scenery gorn-lite) the Kraken-Kala trashing of Monster High get special mention for looking totally sick.
  • All Up to You: The Kraken is inescapable, and undefeatable. So, Lagoona convinces Kala to call off his attack on the school.
  • Art Shift: In a flashback of Lagoona's, the animation goes from CGI to 2D as we see the exact event that instilled her lifelong fear... and the first instance of her bellyupping face.
  • Backstabbing the Alpha Bitch: Peri tries to do this to Kala by advising Lagoona to face the Kraken and overcome her fears. Too bad her conjoined twin is Kala's loyal Beta Bitch, who knew all along what Peri was trying to do.
  • Cat Scare: After a couple of fate-tempting lines from Draculaura, Toralei and Clawdeen, it seems the very Kraken is emerging from the depths... but it's actually Posea's cute trio of underlings, the Sea Mares.
  • Coordinated Clothes: All the main ghouls have patterns on their tops resembling reefs.
  • Dance Party Ending: Natch.
  • Food Fight: Lagoona and Toralei engage in a one-on-one with cupcakes.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: Taunting the Kraken is a big mistake.
  • Don't Try This at Home: In Clawdeen's voiceover while the ghouls are swimming for their lives after waking the Kraken.
A word of advice to all you ghouls out there: If you're ever thinking of looking a Kraken in the eye, don't.
  • Face Your Fears: To ensure the wellbeing of the flower representing her lifeforce, Lagoona must return to the reef and face her greatest fear... Kala.
  • Grand Finale: With the last of G1 Monster High's webisodes released before its release and the planned Ever After High and Monster High crossover live action movie pretty much scrapped, GSR stands as this to the G1 specials. It even ends with the Generation 1 motto.
Voiceover: Be Yourself. Be Unique. Be A Monster.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: Sometimes you just can't get over your fears no matter how hard you try and will just have to live with it.
  • Heroic RRoD: Lagoona decides to conquer her stage fright, she faces the Kraken, she's clearly incredibly brave...and she still freezes up, because you can't get rid of a phobia that easily, and there's no indication that she will get over it in future. What's commended is her bravery in trying to conquer it, and she and others accept it rather than try to make it go away.
  • Innocently Insensitive: How Kala's rivalry with Lagoona sparked, as revealed in a flashback. At a dancing spectacle as kids, Lagoona asked Kala where her parents were in the audience, then eagerly considered that the Blues and Mer'ris could get together after the show. Due to issues with her father's public image, Lagoona's well-meaning comments made Kala angry enough to sabotage her partner's routine.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Twice. The source of the lame puns in both instances is Frankie.
Frankie: Maybe it means you'll know it when you see it! "Sea" it? Haha! Cause we're in the sea- uh... Okay, you don't see it.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: When delineating a plan to the Serpentine sisters, Kala almost outs the Kraken as her father.
  • Meat Versus Veggies: There's a one-scene Call-Back to Draculaura's V.A.M.P. campaign in the beginning. She's gotten a booth for her agenda, and goads Clawd to switch a drumstick to broccoli. He reluctantly complies.
Draculaura: Clawd! Don't put the "eat" in "meat".
  • Mission from God: A mission from a Goddess (in training) is what kicks the plot off.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Monster is a daddy; to Kala. And a pretty violent Papa Wolf at that.
  • New Super Power: For Frankie, Draculaura, Toralei, and Clawdeen, this is a side effect of their being turned into fishy beings. Frankie, reminiscent of the electric eel, gets a Shock and Awe upgrade as well as a glowing eel tail which she uses mainly as a Fantastic Light Source for the other ghouls. Draculaura, resembling a vampire squid, gets tentacles and the ability to squeeze through any space. Clawdeen, resembling the Atlantic wolffish, gets purple skin and Invisibility (this is visible to the audience, as we see an outline of her CGI model and her eyes). Toralei, resembling a lionfish, gets extendable spikes. The new powers also count as mythology gags based on what ghoul gets what power.
  • Oh, Crap!: Notably:
    • Posea realizing she's sent the Kraken to Monster High by accident.
    • Clawd and Heath realizing the ghouls aren't asking them to fight Kala... they're asking them to fight the Kraken, who rips out the creepateria wall in front of them for extra clarification.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: Kala.
  • Shaming the Mob: After Lagoona gets booed for bellyupping again at the dance, all her friends including Toralei inform the crowd of why she came there. This wins over the crowd, and the booing is replaced with rapturous applause... which continues into Kala's performance. That does not end well.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: After having everyone ignore her in the face of Lagoona's misfortune, Kala lets out an unholy screech, calling the Kraken to wreck all she despises.
Kala: Great KRAKEN, DESTROY IT ALL!
  • Wham Line: Less to the audience, and more to the Monster High students.
    Kala: Put her down... dad.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: The ghouls and mansters learn pretty fast they can neither run from, hide from, or defeat the Kraken. Even Deuce's previously sure-fire snake eyes get a No-Sell, and actually reflect back on him, turning him to stone. He's fine later.
    Deuce: Aw, bummer.
