Recap / Monkie Kid S 2 E 0 Revenge Of The Spider Queen

Go To

The Spider Queen, aided by her minions and Lady Bone Demon, take over the city during the Chinese New Year.

Tropes:

  • Badass in Distress: Monkey King, to everyone’s shock, is captured by Spider Queen at the beginning of the episode thanks to the help of Lady Bone Demon, and is used as a battery for her mech alongside the likes of Demon Bull King.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Tang throws some pills at Huntsman, but misses and they appear to do nothing. Suddenly they sprout tentacles and bind him down. Tang had thought they'd turn Huntsman into a duck because of the label.
  • Befriending the Enemy: Mei and MK come to the conclusion that Red Son might actually make a better hero than he does a villain and try to encourage those qualities out of him, much to his annoyance and denial.
  • Blatant Lies: When Huntsman and Syntax show up to inform Spider Queen that they failed to capture Red Son, the Demon Bull King assumes he'd actually been captured and writes him off as worthless. Once he learns Red Son did escape, he proudly claims he never doubted him for a second.
  • Enemy Mine: A main plot point of the episode. Red Son is forced to go to MK's Team for help after the Spider Queen kidnaps his father. Even though the group is understandably reluctant, MK decides to let Red Son team up with them, and by the end they all work together to defeat Spider Queen and save the city - including DBK, who joins his son and the heroes in the final battle.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Mei and Red Son. While initially hostile towards one another, with Mei not trusting Red Son and the latter in turn talking down to her as a “peasant”, the two end up establishing a somewhat friendly relationship by the end of the episode — Mei coming to see some heroic qualities in Red Son while he denies it but does come to respect her, even going out of his way to look out for her during the battle with Spider Queen.
  • Funny Background Event: After Mei yanks Red Son back from going off on his own she bites him on the hand and as the others start discussing their plan, he's still swinging her in circles trying to get her off.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Even though Spider Queen is the Big Bad of this particular special, her success and defeat was all a carefully calculated plan by the Lady Bone Demon, who established herself as the REAL threat, biding her time under the guise of serving Spider Queen. The fact that the legendary Sun Wukong drops his quips and humor when they meet is a sure sign of how dangerous she is if she reaches her goal.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Subverted with Red Son and DBK. Even after helping to save the city and as Mei puts it “did real good hero work", Red Son adamantly asserts he is still a villain and was just in it to rescue his father, but Mei and MK (the former especially) believe that he has some more heroic qualities than he cares to admit. DBK, while still the angry evil king everyone knows him as, also ends up teaming with the heroes to save the day, and even protects MK from the explosion resulting from the Spider Mech being destroyed. Even though they aren’t good guys, it would seem that the DBK family has given up on being overarching villains and has now established an amity with the heroes.
  • Implied Death Threat: Lady Bone Demon escapes, but not before promising to one day "rip the memory of [Sun Wukong] from the world".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Monkey King can go from playful to serious at the drop of the staff, but completely loses his playful nature when he senses the presence of Lady Bone Demon.
Monkey King: So, you thought you had all of the piece right where you wanted them.
Lady Bone Demon: There are so many moves I've yet to play...
Monkey King : (Beat) You should have stayed buried!
  • Papa Wolf: DBK, even though he’s initially as cold towards Red Son as he’s always been, shows by the end of the episode that, deep down, he does care for him, becoming enraged at the idea of Spider Queen hurting him, and actually acknowledges him as his son.
  • Skewed Priorities: When MK and the Monkey King notice the city has been attacked, MK cries "The city!" in horror. Monkey King screams "The fireworks!" which earns him an unimpressed glance from MK.
  • Villains Act, Heroes React: Red Son is the one to come up with a plan to create an antidote to Spider Queen's venom and stop her, which the heroes agree to help him out on for the sake of saving the world.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Downplayed. DBK lowkey expresses pride at his son's accomplishment by calling him "son", much to the latter's joy.
  • Whatever Happened to the Mouse?: DBK and Red Son wonder where Princess Iron Fan is. All they learn is that Spider Queen is trying to capture her as well.
