Thanks to the Wen Clan's manipulations, a malicious spirit called the Aqua Demon note begins to cause trouble in Caiyi Town. Some disciples, including Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, are sent to investigate and deal with the matter.
- Adaptation Expansion:
- Both Jin Zixuan and Nie Huaisang tag along with the disciples' mission. This leads to additional scenes with one or both of them, including a tense moment between Jin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian while Nie Huaisang tries to mediate.
- The episode adds a scene after Wei Wuxian is dragged into the lake where suspicious energy from the spirit starts to surround gim.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Wei Wuxian figures out that there are water ghouls lurking under Lan Wangji's boat Lan Wangji simply by observing the boat's draft.
- Beneath the Mask: In spite of his hostility towards Wei Wuxian, Jin Zixuan immediately agrees with his statement that the Wens are going to be big trouble in the future by adding that doing nothing won't prevent the inevitable.
- The Complainer Is Always Wrong: When Wei Wuxian points out that everyone should stop going easy on the Wen Clan and letting them get away with things, Jiang Cheng warns him to not stand out as "the gun hits the person who takes the lead".
- Contrived Coincidence: Jin Zixuan accuses Wei Wuxian of bumping into his boat on purpose, stating that the river is vast and yet their boats somehow happened to be too close to each other. In Wei Wuxian's defense, it really was an accident.
- The Corruption: Implied. After Wei Wuxian falls into the sea, the Waterborne Abyss seems to be doing something to him as tendrils of resentful energy were slowly seeping into his body, and Wei Wuxian's previous dialogue about using resentful energy plays in the background. However he's saved by Lan Wangji before anything comes out of it.
- Facepalm: Jiang Cheng finds himself facepalming a few times thanks to Wei Wuxian's behaviour irritating him.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Wei Wuxian tips over Lan Wangji's boat and the latter jumps to Lan Xichen's boat, the viewer can see the latter frowning at him for seemingly playing yet another prank on his younger brother. However, when both brothers realize what Wei Wuxian was trying to do, Lan Xichen's expression goes back to his genial one.
- Friendship Denial: Lan Wangji tells Wei Wuxian that he doesn't consider them friends nor even close acquaintances.
- Futile Hand Reach: Jiang Cheng attempts to reach out to Wei Wuxian when the latter's trying to escape the Aqua Demon while carrying Su She, but their hands barely miss thanks to the spirit pulling Wei Wuxian back in with its tentacle.
- Hates Being Touched: Lan Wangji states he doesn't like touching people, which is why he grabs Wei Wuxian by his collar instead of directly touching him.
- Not Me This Time: When Jin Zixuan's boat sways, he accuses Wei Wuxian of crashing into it again. The latter insists he's innocent, and sure enough the root of the problem turns out to be water ghouls.
- Product Placement: Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng stop by a Cornetto shop to eat their dessert before going on their mission.
- Tsundere: Although Lan Wangji is hinted to be developing an interest in Wei Wuxian, he avoids acknowledging it and just acts more cold and irritated than usual around him. He refuses to admit wanting Wei Wuxian to join their mission, and he denies that they're friends even after saving him.
