Now that the negotiations for peace have ended on less than amicable terms, the Jiang Clan and the Wen Clan engage in an all-out war. But as the Jiang family is currently divided, so is their strength against the enemy.
- Adaptation Distillation: To prioritise Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng hurrying back home and seeing the aftermath of the massacre, the episode shows Jiang Fengmian flying back to Lotus Pier but without noticing the boys, thus skipping his final words to them.
- Darkest Hour: Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng experience their bleakest moment of their life in the series so far. In the span of one night, they lose their family and their home, and they can do nothing but hide and grieve about it.
- Desecrating the Dead: Wang Lingjiao pushes Yu Ziyuan's corpse and tries to slap it, but she is stopped by Wen Zhuliu.
- Downer Ending: The Wen Clan takes over Lotus Pier, and Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are the Sole Survivors of the massacre, with both crying over everything that happened.
- Due to the Dead:
- Wen Ning notices that one of the dead junior disciples is missing his silver bell and stops to tie it back, even though it earns him a disdainful look from his fellow clansmen.
- Wen Zhuliu prevents Wang Lingjiao from disrespecting Yu Ziyuan's corpse, arguing that someone like her deserves to be treated with dignity.
- Gray Rain of Depression: Mere seconds after Jiang Cheng bursts into tears on Wei Wuxian's lap, it starts pouring hard.
- Heroic BSoD: Both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng end up breaking down from losing their home and family to the Wen Clan, with the lattr going into a fit of Inelegant Blubbering while Wei Wuxian silently hides his tears.
- It's All My Fault: It's implied that Wei Wuxian blames himself for the fall of Lotus Pier, which is why he doesn't fight back when Jiang Cheng lashes out at him and even nearly kills him.
- I Want My Mommy!: Played for Drama. After he vents out his rage at Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng breaks down in tears and cries that he wants his parents.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Wen Ning uses his reputation as a shy and nervous klutz to fake his clumsiness to cover up for Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng sneaking around Lotus Pier. One such example is when a few Wen cultivators nearly catch the two teens spying on them in the water, prompting Wen Ning to "fall" in the water nearby and distract them while Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng made their escape.
- Pet the Dog: While they never had the best relationship, Yu Ziyuan readily entrusts Wei Wuxian with Jiang Cheng's life.
- Watching Troy Burn: Tied to a boat that is carrying them downstream, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng can only watch as their beloved home is burned to its foundations.
- You Are Too Late: As soon as Zidian releases them, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng paddle back to Lotus Pier in hopes of finding survivors, only to discover that everyone has already been killed, including Jiang Cheng's parents.
