Wei Wuxian attempts to help Nie Huaisang cheat in an exam while avoiding getting caught, but Lan Wangji's presence ensures that this is no easy task.
- All for Nothing: While Wei Wuxian tries every tactic he can think of to help Nie Huaisang cheat, his efforts are for naught since the latter ends up failing the test anyway.
- Batman Gambit: For his final plan, Wei Wuxian throws a scrunched up paper ball in Nie Huaisang's direction, but Lan Wangji catches it. This was actually intentional on Wei Wuxian's part — he knew Lan Wangji would intercept, so he drew a picture of the latter and (correctly) predicted that the Lan clansman would get distracted by the drawing. Sure enough, Lan Wangji continuously glares at Wei Wuxian (who throws more paper balls at him) after he sees the drawing, allowing Nie Huaisang to successfully look at his answers without getting caught.
- Crush Filter: Parodied. The bird that's supposed to deliver Nie Huaisang his cheat sheet falls in Love at First Sight with Lan Wangji and fantasizes the latter as a handsome bird.
- Epic Fail: Nie Huaisang is able to copy down Lan Wangji's answers thanks to Wei Wuxian distracting the latter. Lan Wangji gets top marks, while Nie Huaisang somehow still flunks the exam.
- Five-Second Foreshadowing: From the moment Nie Mingjue shouts Nie Huaisang's name just as Lan Wangji is about to read the results of the younger Nie's exam, it's already obvious to the viewer that he flunked even before he apologizes to his brother for failing.
- High-Pressure Emotion: Downplayed. After getting flustered by Wei Wuxian drawing a portrait of him (and continuing to throw paper balls in his direction), Lan Wangji literally starts blowing puffs of steam off his head.
- Love at First Sight: Played for Laughs. The bird that Wei Wuxian uses to deliver a cheat sheet ends up getting smitten with Lan Wangji the moment it lays its eye on him.
- Mundane Utility: Much like how a cultivator can use their spiritual energy to control their swords, Wei Wuxian can do the same with a brush as a cheating tactic. However, the classroom has an item that can detect this, so the attempt ends in failure.
- Rule of Three: Wei Wuxian tries three different strategies to help Nie Huaisang cheat in a test.
